Down to 32

Good Morning. This is the Daily Breakroom. We’re here to spoil you with March Madness news just like those teams spoiling your brackets.

We’re only covering college bball today so let’s get the clock started.

After watching the Friday games I felt like there were 16 upsets, but in reality there were only 3.

Let’s go through some of the matchups

11 Pittsburgh vs 6 Iowa State

Iowa State averaged 67 points per game on offense this season. Pittsburgh held them to well below that. Pittsburgh only allowed 23 points in the first half and 18 in the second to up Iowa State 59-41.

6 TCU vs 11 Arizona State

This came down to the wire as TCU scored on a floater with 1.5 seconds left to get the 72-70 win.

8 Memphis vs 9 Florida Atlantic

What a crazy ending in this game. There’s no shortage of tweeters talking about how Memphis got robbed as the refs missed a clear possession and timeout call with Memphis up 1 point with 7.5 seconds to go(take a breath after reading that sentence). The refs called it a jump ball and FAU got possession. FAU scored on an easy drive to the hoop with 2 seconds left to get the W.

Watch the final seconds go down.

5 Miami vs 12 Drake

Drake led Miami 30-25 at the half and held the lead most of the 2nd half. But…..Miami held drake to only 1 point in the final 5 minutes of play to win 63-56.

4 UConn vs 13 Iona

The UConn Huskies were in trouble at the half . They were down 2 points to the Iona Gaels, who are coached by Rick Pitino. It was looking like this could be one of the biggest upsets of the day but the Huskies pulled through with a dominant second half outscoring the Gales by 26 to advance to the second round with an 87-63 win.

1 Purdue vs 16 Farleigh Dickinson University

Of course we had to save the best for last. The only thing that could be more “upsetting” than this game is if the bus driver in Billy Madison actually turned the bus around.

This matchup had all sorts of things in Purdue’s favor.

  1. Purdue has a 7 foot 4 dude playing center.

  2. FDU is the shortest team in college basketball with their tallest starter by 6’6”.

  3. Purdue was a 23.5 point favorite in this game.

FDU played great defense, pressed most of the game, and ended up coming away with a 63-58 win against the 1 seed. FDU will play FAU on Sunday and making it to the Sweet 16 isn’t that far out of reach now.

Second Round Saturday

We’ve got quite a second round setup for today. We’ll see if 13 seed Furman can create another upset, this time against 5 seeded San Diego State(on at 12:10 on CBS). We also have another upset primed and ready for action as 15 seed Princeton takes on 7 seed Missouri(on at 6:10 on TNT).

Here are some games that we’ll be looking out for today as they should be super competitive and fun games to watch.

4 Tennessee vs 5 Duke @ 2:40pm on CBS

1 Houston vs 9 Auburn @ 7:10pm on TBS

1 Alabama vs 8 Maryland @9:40pm on TBS

That’s all for today. Enjoy your Saturday and the madness!
