$500,000,000 Bet
Good Morning. This is The Daily Breakroom. We’re like the Monday morning coffee after Super Bowl Sunday, here to help you get through your day.
We’ve got one topic to cover today and that’s the Super Bowl. We can catch you up on other activities tomorrow. A “football only” day feels right, as the start of the next NFL regular season is 206 days away.
Let’s get to it.
The Kansas City Chiefs made a $500,000,000 bet in 2020 on QB Patrick Mahomes, signing him to a 10 year contract to lead the organization. Some criticized the contract, especially with the guaranteed money clauses. It was a bit of a gamble for Mahomes as well, signing such a long term deal that would lock him out of renegotiating a higher salary every few years. The deal is already paying off for the Chiefs and Mahomes.
On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57. The final score was 38-35. This is the 2nd Super Bowl win for the Chiefs in the Patrick Mahomes and Coach Andy Reid era.
There were lots of questions leading up to the game.
-Can you count out Mahomes ever?
-The Eagles offensive line is the best in the league, how can you stop them?
-The Eagles have a great defensive front and secondary, will the Chiefs be able to stop a pass rush?
-Is Eagles QB Jalen Hurts’ shoulder okay?
The questions were answered. No, you shouldn’t count Mahomes out. Yes, the Eagles offensive line look so good I thought they were going to run the Chiefs defense out of Phoenix. Yes, the Chiefs offense was able to hold of the Eagles pass rush as the O-Line allowed 0 sacks. And yes, Hurts was perfectly healthy for the game.
The game started quickly and the Eagles’ offense looked explosive. After each team scored a touchdown with their first possession, the Chiefs’ offense slowed down the rest of the first half. The Chiefs’ offense also looked doomed towards the end of the second quarter when Mahomes reaggravated his high ankle sprain. After trading initial touchdowns, Philadelphia was able to score 17 more points while the Chiefs were fortunate to score a defensive touchdown. The teams went into halftime with the Eagles up 24-14 and Mahomes’ health in question.

After an awesome Halftime Show from Rihanna, the 2nd half started.
The rest of the game was uneventful but the scores don’t reflect that. Points kept getting put on the board in what was smooth execution from both offenses. The Chiefs scored on all 4 of their second half possessions and the Eagles scored on 2 of their 4 possessions. The Eagles did punt once, which the Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney returned to the Eagles’ 5 yard line, setting Kansas City up for an easy score.
TONEY ALMOST TOOK IT BACK ON THIS RETURN 😲
That's the longest punt return in Super Bowl history #SBVLII

Hurts looked great for the Eagles. He completed 27 out of 38 passes and threw for one touchdown. He also ran for 70 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was looking like he was going to be the MVP all game.
Once Patrick Mahomes came out of the tunnel for the 2nd half and was showing little symptoms of an ankle sprain, he took control of the offense. Mahomes was ultimately named MVP, completing 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and throwing for 3 touchdowns.
Of course, we can’t just have a Super Bowl with two great offenses moving the ball up and down the field with great execution and not have a controversial call “rigging” the game. On the Chiefs’ last series of the game, it was looking like the Eagles would get the ball back with about 1:50 to go. On a 3rd and 8 play, there was a defensive holding call against Eagles’ James Bradberry which allowed the Chiefs to waste more time, kick a field goal and give the ball back to the Eagles with only 8 seconds left(you can watch the play below). The Eagles couldn’t create magic, only having one play on their final drive, which was a hail mary pass that came up very short.
James Bradberry: “It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide."
Wow…

It was a great game, with two great Quarterbacks, who we will be watching compete at a very high level for several years. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a Super Bowl rematch next year in Las Vegas.
Grab another cup of coffee, we’ll see you tomorrow.
