Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Plan?
Good Morning,
Let's jump right into a NFL Sunday Recap.
San Francisco 49ers @ Philadelphia Eagles
This isn't a pre game speech and I don't want to get philosophical, but let's define something quickly.
Murphy's Law. I'm sure you've heard of it. A quick google will provide us with Murphy's First Law which is "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". And boy, did it go wrong for the 49ers last night.
The 49ers were already down to their 3rd string QB for the season, Brock Purdy. Purdy took an untimely hit to his throwing arm on the first offensive drive of the game, injuring his elbow and fumbling the ball 20 yards in the air. Jumping down the depth chart to your 4th string QB in the NFC Championship Game isn't ideal, but it's exactly the situation they 49ers were in. Things couldn't possible get worse, right? WRONG. QB Josh Johnson, who came in to relieve Purdy, left the game in the 3rd quarter with a concussion. The Niners had to bring Purdy back in, whose throwing ability was non existent the rest of the game. It felt as if San Francisco was doomed from the start.
The Eagles advance to the Super Bowl with a 31-7 win in which they were in control of the game from the first drive, although it was an abnormally sloppy game from the 49ers. The first drive of the game resulted in an Eagles touchdown after a 4th and 3 was converted by a long a completion from Jalen Hurts to Devonta Smith, to get the Eagles into the redzone. Best part is, the 4th and 3 catch wasn't even a catch.
Aside from a few positive plays on each side of the ball for the Niners, the rest was history. The Eagles only had 269 total offensive yards but controlled the line of scrimmage and had 3 takeaways. They rushed for 148 yards and controlled the ball for over 60% of the game. The Eagles did what they needed to do win this game, converting 4 out of 6 times in the redzone. It's going to be Fly Eagles Fly all the way to Phoenix where they will take on their AFC competitor on February 12.
Cincinnati Bengals @ Kansas City Chiefs
We had another nail biter in the AFC Championship game. I originally thought this would be a close matchup and that was the case for sure. Scoring was slow in the beginning of the game with only 3 field goals being made midway through the 2nd quarter. Travis Kelce caught the only touchdown of the first half with 3:53 to go. Bengals QB was facing pressure all and the offense was little sluggish but you expected the Bengals to make some adjustments as they were going into halftime down 13-6.
The Bengals came out firing the 2nd half to tie up the game when Tee Higgins caught a 27 yard pass from Joe borrow at the 9:54 mark in the 3rd quarter. The Chiefs and Bengals traded touchdowns once more throughout the game and offenses were moving a bit slower during the 4th quarter. Burrow had thrown two interceptions during the game and it was looking Patrick Mahomes could only stand on one leg at some points. Another overtime showdown between this team was in the making. This brings us to our play of the day
With 16 seconds remaining, no timeouts remaining for the Chiefs, and it's 3rd & 4, Mahomes, with a high ankle sprain, scrambled out of bounds for the first down with only 8 seconds remaining. After Mahomes stepped out of bounds, Bengals D-End Joseph Ossai pushed Mahomes and received an unnecessary roughness penalty for the late hit, costing the team 15 yards. The Chiefs likely wouldn't have had time to run another play and would've been kicking a 60 yard field goal to win the game, except now they were attempting the game winner from 45 yards. Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker kicked in through the uprights with 3 seconds remaining, giving the Chiefs the 23-20 lead, and ultimately the win. Watch the end of the game unfold below.
