Break In Case Of Emergency
or just fight it out!
Morning.
If you’re from the Northeast, you’re always looking for an edge, or some might call it a chip on the shoulder. We’ve got a few cases of getting that chip on your shoulder to discuss today, so let’s cut through the noise and help you find out what you need to know.
Headlines
🪓 Break In Case Of Emergency: UConn Men’s Basketball head coach Dan Hurley loves finding ways to get his team up for a game in a way that makes his guys feel like underdogs, even if they’re favored by 11.5 points. So what’s going on? UConn’s plane that they were taking to Phoenix was originally supposed to take off at 6 pm on Wednesday. The plane was coming to Hartford Bradley Airport from Kansas City, and it had mechanical issues and a flight staff that was over their flight times. That means no flying last night. UConn had to scramble, cut some people from the travel list, and get a smaller plan to take them across the country this morning at 1 am. It will throw off the schedule a bit, but they should have time to recover. Dan Hurley is going to use this a way to pump his men up, make no mistake. Who knew that a plane is the only thing stopping UConn this year?
🥊 Sticking with their attempt to be the tough guy in the Northeast, the NY Rangers and NJ Devils started their matchup at MSG with mayhem last night. All 10 skaters on the ice dropped their gloves and started fighting, and 8 were thrown out. After a wild game, the Rangers would win 4-3. Oh, yeah, we forgot to mention that the 5 vs. 5 fights are pretty hard to break up when you only have four refs on the ice!
🏈 We had a blockbuster trade in the NFL yesterday when it was announced the Bills WR Stefon Diggs had been traded to the Houston Texans. The weird thing is that Diggs is going to Houston in return for just a 2025 2nd-round draft pick, and the Bills also had to send a 5th and 6th-round pick to Houston with Diggs. What’s not so weird is that the Bills will save ~$20 mil in cap space this year and $60 mil over the next 3. Maybe that’s worth not dealing with the headaches that Diggs caused the last two years. The Texans are in a win-now stage as they’ve got C.J. Stroud on a rookie contract, along with a few other dudes. The question is… Did the Texans win the offseason?
Highlights
🏀 Who is Malachi Flynn, and how did he put up 50 points in an NBA game? Flynn is a backup point guard on one of the NBA’s worst teams, the Detroit Pistons. He scored 50 points off the bench in a Pistons 121-113 loss to the Atlanta Hawks last night. Flynn was 17 of 25, and he has more points in a single game than Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Kawhi, Chris Paul, and even Magic Johnson. FROM THE BENCH!
🏀 Devin Booker was the 2nd highest scorer of last night when he dropped 40 on the Cavs to help the Phoenix Suns get a 122-101 win as the Suns continue to try to move up from a play-in tournament spot in the standings. KD added 32 points.
🏀 The Boston Celtics keep dominating good teams. They beat the OKC Thunder 135-100 last night and Kristaps Porzingis had 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead both teams.
🏀 Jalen Johnson had a triple double for the Atlanta Hawks last night in a 121-113 over the Pistons. Johnson finished with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.
🏒 LA Kings left winger had a hat trick in a 5-2 win over the Seattle Kraken last night. Pierre-Luc Dubois assisted with all three goals.
⚾️ Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run as a Dodger last night. It was the 7th-inning home run that gave LA a 5-3 lead over the SF Giants and would ultimately be the game-winning run, as SF scored 1 more run in the 8th.
The Oakland A’s Sacramento AAA’s*
The Oakland A’s are about to be the Sacramento AAA’s as their lease at the Oakland Coliseum is up after this season. The A’s have decided to leave Oakland because the city declined to pay for major upgrades/build a new stadium for the team. No one goes to the games because the team is cheap and doesn’t spend money to be good, and it’s an all-around disaster. What’s more of a disaster is the fact that they are moving to Vegas and won’t have a stadium until 2028. The A’s are looking to share the SF Giant’s AAA team’s stadium in Sacramento for three years as a holdover.
Many of the A’s staff members, media representatives, and anyone who works close to the team will have to move or travel 90 miles east daily for work. The A’s are off to a hot** 1-5 start this season and are drawing an average of ~6,500 fans a game, much less than the triple-A stadium can hold!
*It would be kind of funny if they were called the Sacramento Athletics Athletics Athletics
** sarcasm
