A Buffalo vs. A Ram
Who Wins? + NFL Week 2
Where do we even begin today? We knew there weren't the high-profile ranked matchups that we might see at the end of the year, but it’s college football and that never leaves you longing for excitement on a Saturday. Top-ranked teams didn’t show up until the 2nd half or the 4th quarter. Heck, I don’t think Bama really showed up at all. We got upsets and we got late-night thrillers.
Let’s Start With The Hype
Colorado found another way to stack the cards against them even though they were the star of Saturday with a celebrity-filled sideline. Even with the Colorado Buffaloes feeling slighted in their in-state matchup against Colorado State, the game got off to a Rocky Mountain start.
CSU led 14-7 early and it was wild 5 plays that led to 3 scores. Shiloh Sanders had a pick-6 for the Buffs and then CSU would score 3 plays later on a trick play pass and on the next drive CSU would strip the ball for a scoop and score touchdown. Colorado would eventually tie it up 14-14 at the end of the first quarter and in the next two quarters, both defenses really shined.
Enter the 4th quarter and CSU is up 21-14. Colorado would outscore CSU 14-7, including a last-minute 98-yard drive down the field for a TD and 2-point conversion to get the game into OT.
Colorado would get the game into 2OT where they would score and then pick off CSU to end the game.
I have 4 takeaways here.
There was a cheap shot by CSU on 2-way star Travis Hunter. It’s unfortunate to see because Hunter is likely to be out a few weeks now and he’s a proven difference-maker for Colorado
Penalties killed CSU. They had 17 flags thrown for 182 yards. Take away those flags and that would mean CSU wasn’t aggressive and that changes the game completely.
CSU has two dawgs on their square. Tight End Dallin Holker is a dude and he’s going to some NFL looks if he wasn’t before. D-lineman Mohamed Kamara is a beast and he was in the Shedeur Sanders’ face all day long.
I love the resiliency of this Colorado team. 3-0 is a huge deal, especially for the team who only won 1 game last year. Let’s see how they do in their next two matchups where they play Oregon next weekend and the USC.
What Else Went Down On Saturday?
#1 Georgia only led South Carolina 17-14 with 9 minutes to go in their matchup. Georgia would win 24-14.
#2 Michigan would only lead Bowling Green 14-6 at the end of the first half. The Wolverines would score 17 in the 3rd to win 31-6. Michigan will have head coach Jim Harbaugh back on the sidelines next week.
#3 Florida State had everyone in Tallahassee shaking in their boots when they just narrowly escaped Boston College 31-29, partially thanks to a facemask call at the end of the game.
#10 Alabama tried out a new QB and had to switch to QB #3 just to squeak by USF. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of the half and Bama would score 14 in the 2nd half to win 17-3.
#11 Tennessee got rocked by Florida in The Swamp. Florida looks rebuilt just two weeks after falling to Utah in the season opener. Florida won 29-16 and Tennessee hasn’t won in Gainesville since 2003.
Missouri upset #15 Kansas State with a game-winning 61-yard field goal.
NFL Sunday
We’ve got to get you in and out in under 5 minutes. Let’s check in on some key Sunday matchups and what we’re looking for. (all game times are in EST btw)
Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions, 1 pm on FOX
Are the Lions the real deal? Can they go 2-0 or will the Seahawks recover from a week 1 loss to the Rams? The Seahawks are currently getting 4.5 points and the O/U is 47.5. I’m taking the Seahawks and the under.
LA Chargers at Tennessee Titans, 1 pm on CBS
Both teams are 0-1, but the Chargers need a win. You can’t start 0-2 in the AFC.
Las Vegas Raiders at Buffalo Bills, 1 pm on CBS
The Bills are 8-point favorites and O/U is 47.5. 8 points is a lot but I think the Bills might cover that. What I’m looking for is to see Josh Allen play smart football. Mistakes will happen, but I want to see him limit the plays that are unnecessarily risky. Also, take the under.
KC Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars, 1 pm on CBS
KC is giving 3.5 to the Jags and the O/U is 51.5. I’m hammering the over here and think KC will win straight up, but I want to see how the Jags play against the Chiefs now that the Chiefs have Chris Jones back on the defense and Travis Kelce back on the offense.
SF 49ers at LA Rams, 4:05 on FOX
Are the Rams sneaky good again? Is Brocky Purdy the real deal for the 49ers? Week 2 is going to let us know real fast. The 49ers are giving 7 and the O/U 45.5. I’m taking the 49ers -7 and the over. I think the Rams’ offense is good I just don’t think the Rams’ defense will have the success they had against the Seahawks last week.
New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys, 4:25 on CBS
This is a battle of the defenses today. The Cowboys have potential on offense, but this Jets D is freaking stacked. Will the lack of an offense for the Jets be enough for the Cowboys to get this done in Dallas? The Jets are +9 and the O/U is 38.5. 9 is a lot of points, especially when your offense hasn’t been super hot. I’m taking the Jets ATS and I am taking the over(life is too short).
That’s a lot of football for today. We’ll be back tomorrow with some scores, maybe a little less analysis, and then we’ll talk some MLB as we’ve got teams getting into playoff position.
Remember…. Don’t let your Mondays ruin your Sundays!
Cheers
