Chris Paul Out, Bradley Beal In
Today’s Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes and 53 seconds
Good Morning from the Daily Breakroom. We’ve got some trade news in the NBA plus some other free agency updates. Also, things aren’t as good in Buffalo as we believed last.
Let’s get into it.
NBA Free Agency
With the NBA draft only 3 days away, teams are making moves so they can their ducks in a row before selecting their picks or making trades with them. Here are a few updates.
Suns Are Out With The Old
The Phoenix Suns have agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Washington Wizards that sends Chris Paul to the Wizards and Bradley Beal to the Suns. The Wizards also get Landry Shamet, some second rounds picks, and some potential first that probably won’t amount to anything. The Suns are doubling down on their win now bet after trading for Kevin Durant in the middle of the 2022-2023 season.
This is a very large contract for the Suns to pick up as Beal is owed $200 mil over the next 4 years. It’s likely that Deandre Ayton is going to get traded now even though new coach Frank Vogel said he’s excited to work with Ayton. The Suns will need to trade Ayton to get some additional pieces on the roster to fill some defensive gaps and get some more depth on the bench.
The Wizards are going to be in a rebuilding phase for the next few years so it’s interesting to see how this will play out. Are they going to trade CP for players or additional draft picks or will he be part of the rebuild and lead some young guys for the next few years?
The best part of all this was how Chris Paul found out. He was on a flight to NYC to make an appearance on Good Morning America when he received a text from his son breaking the news to him.
Draymond Green Goes To Free Agency
Draymond Green has declined his $27.5 million player option for next season and will become a free agent for the first time in his NBA career. Draymond is represented by Klutch Sports, which was started by some guys from the LeBron crew. The CEO Rich Paul said they will be working closely with Golden State to see if they can get a deal done.
Draymond is likely for a 4 or 5-year deal that can get him close to retirement. I guess we’ll see what the market determines is his value.
Is Damian Lillard On The Move?
It looks like Damian Lillard put up a cryptic message on Insta with a picture of himself on a private jet. Some are speculating that he was on a plane after meeting with Miami Heat. He might have even followed the Heat’s Instagram account. Is Dametime making the move to Miami to help the Heat compete for another shot at the title next season?
Drama In Buffalo Continues
The Buffalo Bills were concerned last week when WR Stefon Diggs did not attend the first day of camp. He attended the next day and everything seemed to be okay but reports are now coming out that he’s upset with his role in the offense and would like to be more involved in playcalling.
We don’t know what the situation is in the coach’s office and why Diggs might want to be more involved but we can imagine if you’re one of the best wide receivers in the league and your team doesn’t have a ton of depth at WR, it’s going to be difficult to be a primary target every play. Teams are going to focus on you and take you away as an option as much as they can. We’ll see if the Bills get Diggs involved with play selection and if that improves their offense this year. We’re sure any way to improve the offense that relies less on Josh Allen taking hits in the open field will be considered.
Baseball Actions
College World Series
The Tennessee Volunteers erased a 4-run deficit against the Stanford Cardinals with a 4-run 5th inning and 2-run 7th inning to avoid elimination in the College World Series. Tennessee dominated from the batter’s box with 13 hits.
The LSU Tigers looked like they were going to pull off an upset against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons after scoring off of some Wake Forest errors. The 1 seeded Demon Deacons made a comeback in the 6th inning to tie it up and drove one more run in during the 8th inning to secure the win.
