Conference play begins

We’re here for week 3 of the NFL, but before we get to that, let’s do a quick recap of some of the newsworthy games from a beautiful Saturday of football.

Saturday Recap

🏈 #18 Michigan beat #11 USC 27-24, and it was welcoming to the Big 10 for USC. Michigan beat the former Pac-12 school by running for 291 yards and three scores and only throwing for 32 yards. As much as we like to talk about the Big10 being tough, USC looked like they belonged after some halftime adjustments. Miller Moss finished with 28/51 for 283 passing yards and 3 TDs for the Trojans. Moss’ biggest mistake came when he threw a pick 6 in the 3rd quarter and gave Michigan a 20-10 lead.

🏈 If we say the score was 70-50, do you know what game we’re talking about? You might be thinking college basketball, but NOPE. This was the final score of North Carolina vs James Madison and the Tar Heels lost this one. Basketball season can’t come soon enough in Chapel Hill

🏈#1 Texas beat UL Monroe 51-3(as they should). Arch Manning started for the Burnt Orange on Saturday, and he threw for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. He completed 15 of his 29 attempts.

🏈We’re sorry we let you down on this one. Utah vs Oklahoma State did not hit the over. Utah beat OKST 22-19 and the game wasn’t really that close. OKST scored 16 points in the 4th. Utah didn’t have Cam Rising on the field, but they still had good production on offense, thanks to their run game. The Utes ran the ball 51 times for 250 yards. Without Cam Rising, they turned to Isaac Wilson (younger brother of NFL QB Zach Wilson), and he was 17 of 29 for 1 TD and 2 INTs. I guess the INTs run in the family.

🏈The Miami Hurricanes are a pretty good football team, at least it seems that way so far. After a weird start to the 1st quarter where USF had a lead on Miami, the Canes brought a wave of domination in this cross-state battle. A few odd bounces gave USF an extra opportunity or two and they were leading Miami 9-7 with 6 minutes left in the first. Miami would go on a 43-6 scoring run the rest of the game. Cam Ward showed up as his relaxed self and was 24/34 for 404 yards and 3 TDs. The Canes also had 3 rushing TDs out of the backfield, including a 91-yard TD run by Jordan Lyle. Is “The U” back?

🏈The one game we were all looking forward to was #6 Tennesse vs #15 Oklahoma. Tennesse may have spoiled Oklahoma’s SEC debut, but Oklahoma didn’t do itself any favors on offense. Tennessee won this game 25-15 on the road and was definitely a defensive win. The Volunteers got three turnovers in the first half and also held the Sooners to -4 yards between the 2nd and 3rd quarters. It wasn’t the most impressive day for Tennessee, as they only scored 6 points in the 2nd half, but a win is a win.

🏈 We haven’t talked much about the circus show that is Colorado but this one seems worth it. The Buffaloes were down a TD against Baylor and Colorado threw up a hail mary with 00:00 on the clock. Boom, TD, we’re in OT. Colorado would score in OT and then force a fumble to win this thing. Pretty cool.

NFL Week 3

We’ve got a few games today that are worthy of your attention, and we’ve also got TWO Monday Night Football games tomorrow.

That’s right. The Jags vs. the Bills game is at 7:30 tomorrow night, and the Commanders vs. the Bengals game is at 8:15.

Here’s what we’re looking at for good Sunday games.

🏈 Chicago @ Indy, 1 p.m. on CBS. We’re still trying to see if Caleb Williams can shine this early in his NFL career. The Bears have talent, and the Colts have grit. We should be getting some highlights from at least one quarterback in this one. If it’s not Caleb Williams’ arm that shows off, it will be Anthony Richardson's athleticism that shows off.

🏈 The Eagles will face the Saints in New Orleans at 1 pm, and we will find out if one or both of the teams is the real deal. The Saints won their first two games with a combined score of 91-29. The Eagles fell to the Falcons last week 22-21 after sneaking a week 1 win out over Green Bay. So, there are a few things we can learn this week. The Saints are either really really good and possibly so are the Eagles. Or maybe both teams are just a fluke. I think we’re in for a 1 pm battle.

🏈 We’ve got a grit game in Pittsburgh at 1 pm. It’s the lowest points total this weekend between the LA Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. 34.5 points is the total and the Steelers are 2.5-point favorites at home. You know the Steelers aren’t a flashy, high-scoring offense, and neither are the Chargers. The reasons are completely different for both squads. The Steelers aren’t flashy because of their QBs, and the Chargers aren’t flashy because it’s not Jim Harbaugh’s style. Tune into CBS if you need to see two teams gutting it out.

The evening slots are where it’s at today.

🏈 Baltimore @ Dallas at 4:25 pm. The Ravens are itching for a win after starting 0-2 for the first time since 2015, and Dallas can’t afford to drop this one at home, especially after getting whooped by the Saints last week. This is a hard one to get a read on. The Cowboy's defense should be looking to step up big this week, but Lamar Jackson is also exceptional against the NFC, likely because the NFC just doesn’t get enough reps against him. I think we’ll see some really good football in this game.

🏈SF 49ers @ LA Rams. It's another 4:25 pm game that should have some great schemes and QB play. Like the game right above, this one is hard to get a read on. The Rams are 0-2, and the Niners are coming off a loss to Minnesota. I feel like this is the same story every year. All of the public money is on the Niners here, and the spread opened at -3 for SF, and it’s now at -6.5. This seems like a no-brainer to take the Rams ATS. Before you go throw down $$ on this game, make sure you double check on the injury report. CMC, Deebo, George Kittle, Cooper Kupp, and Puka Nacua all might be missing this game.

🏈Normally this game wouldn’t interest me but it’s the betting lines that spark my intrigue. Lions @ Cardinals, 4:25 pm and the Lions are favored by 3 points. I don’t want to overthink this but the Lions had a weird loss to the Bucs last week. They couldn’t score points although they moved the ball well. The Lions have one of the best O-lines in the league, and it’s literally the opposite for the Cardinals D-line. The Lions should roar in Phoenix.

🏈Our primetime game has Patrick Mahomes and the KC Chiefs facing the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta. It's another hard one to read. The Chiefs offense still isn’t as explosive as you’d like to see it be, but they might not need to be today. Kirk Cousins is taking some time to warm up in games, and it doesn’t seem like he’s 100% back from his Achilles injury. Betting against Mahomes always seems dumb but I just haven’t seen enough that makes me think the Chiefs will blow the doors off this one and cover the 3 points they are giving. I think Mahomes could have a “breakout” game but its’ really going to come down to the Chiefs defensive front putting pressure on Kirk Cousins and forcing him to move around in the pocket.

That’s our rundown for today. Enjoy the games and remember.

Don’t let your Mondays ruin your Sundays.
