What Is A Derby Anyways?
Good Morning. We’ve got a pretty light Tuesday for you, so let’s get right into the action and get you on your way.
Don’t forget your caffeine.
Here we go.
Home Run Derby
Every once in a while, our brain stops working, metaphorically of course.
My brain decided to hit the pause button while watching baseball after baseball go over the left field wall last night. Then I realized it wasn’t a pause button, it was a reset button and I was left wondering “What the hell is a derby?”
So, we hit the trusty ole Google machine, and in a trade for some of my personal data, it provided me with a definition of the word derby. Here’s the one that I think is most relevant.
Der·by2
noun
a sporting contest open to the general public.
plural noun: derbies
"sign up for the fishing derby"
I CALL BS!
I haven’t seen any open tryouts to join Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby.. and if I did, there’s no way anyone in the general public could have a chance to win the damn thing.
I’m not sure if you watched last night, but the eight contestants combined for 341 home runs, and the balls traveled 138,723 feet which is 26.27 miles.
We said the batters would be hitting balls to the space needle and they certainly did. 26.27 miles is the equivalent of 230 space needles.
Anyways, it was quite the showing, and we mere mortals probably couldn’t get a ball to the warning track.
Julio Rodriguez blasted 41 home runs in the first round, giving his home crowd a lot to cheer for. Randy Arozarena and Vlad Jr. took care of the business in the 2nd round and would face off in the final round
Vlad Jr. was looking pretty tired after all his at-bats but he pulled off the win and is now the first Blue Jay to ever win a home run derby. He joins his Dad as a derby winner, making them the first father-son duo to win a home run derby.

Here’s where Vlad Jr. hit all of his final-round homers.

It was all around an exciting showing with some healthy competition. The question is, whose season is about to be turned around after hitting all them moon shots?
MLB All-Star Game
The All-Star game used to have some greater significance as it would determine if the AL or the NL would get home-field advantage in the world series. With that being discontinued a few years ago, this game is truly an exhibition.
There’s not much else to say other than tune in and watch the best of the best who is available to play tonight. The game is at 8 pm ET tonight and it will be live on Fox.
If you’re curious, here are the starting rosters. Also, Gerrit Cole is the starting pitcher for the AL, and Zac Gallen is starting for the NL.
NBA Free Agency + Summer League
Detroit Pistons
Forward Isaiah Stewart has agreed to a four year contract extension worth $64 million with the Detroit Pistons. This is a pretty reasonable price for the Piston’s to secure Stewart for the next few years as his numbers continue to climb every season.
Indiana Pacers
The Pacers have reached out to the Toronto Raptors to inquire about a possible trade for Raptors’ star forward Pascal Siakam. Siakam is entering the final season of his current contract so the Pacers are putting themselves in a tough spot. They’ll need to provide assets in order to get Siakam from the Raptors but then there’s no guarantee he won’t just walk when the season is done.
Portland Trailblazers
Damian Lillard wants to be traded to the Miami Heat. The Miami Heat could use him and he sure could use the Miami Heat. Even though the Portland front office knows that Dame wants to be traded, no moves have been made yet.
It’s been 10 days since Dame made it known that he’d like to be traded and the weird thing is the Portland GM hasn’t spoken to Lillard since. As of now, Portland seems to be remaining patient either for Dame to change his mind or for Miami to bring an enticing trade package to their doorstep.
Summer League Is Over For Wemby
The San Antonio Spurs are shutting down Victor Wembanyama for the remainder of the Summer League. Wemby just finished his season in the French league just before being drafted. The plan was to have him play in two games and then get to work for the rest of the offseason. For now, Wemby will be hitting the weight room, the dining room, and the basketball court in preparation for his rookie season.
Northwestern Football Fiasco
Does anyone really know what’s going on over at Northwestern? We’re not really sure. What we do know is that Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald has been fired after 17 years at the helm amid hazing claims.
On Friday it was announced that Fitzgerald would be suspended without pay for two weeks this summer after an investigation was conducted when the college received a complaint from a former player regarding hazing.
After some more stories regarding hazing and sexual abuse came out, the university reversed its decision or really quadrupled down. The school made the decision to lay down the strictest form of discipline and fire Fitzgerald.
We’ll keep you updated if we get more info.
What’s on TV Today?
If you’re not feeling the All-Star game tonight that’s okay.
There are NBA summer league games on ESPNU at 6 pm ET and ESPN2 at 8 and 10 pm ET.
Don’t forget about Wimbledon coverage that will be on ESPN all day.
Have a great Tuesday!
