Different Team, Same Result
Were you entertained? Seriously, were you? Even with an overtime Super Bowl that happened to be the longest Super Bowl in history, I’m still undecided.
Let’s recap and talk about a few other sports.
Super Bowl 58
The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s the case for the Kansas City Chiefs, who won another Super Bowl in a very different fashion. It doesn’t matter who they’re playing from the NFC; the Chiefs seem to have found a way to get the job done.
Although I thought everything San Francisco had the better roster, I felt the same way that many fans do: it’s hard to bet against Patrick Mahomes. So, I kept myself sane and didn’t bet against Patrick Mahomes. I was nervous from the start. San Francisco controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and I thought the 49ers would run away with this one.
So what happened that the Chiefs were able to come back?
👉️ The Chiefs started to eat up the Niners’ run game, and SF didn’t get the wheels rolling again until OT
👉️ Dre Greenlaw blew out his Achilles running onto the field, leaving a gap at LB that the Chiefs could exploit.
👉️ The Chiefs had a cool, calm and collected Patrick Mahomes and he made big throws and big runs when it was needed. The Greenlaw gap at LB allowed Mahomes some opportunities to get those big runs in the middle of the field
👉️ The Chiefs secondary played lights out, but we’ve got to give a little credit to Brock Purdy as he made some nicely timed throws and put balls into tight spaces.
👉️ Special teams also played a factor. Jake Moody missed a PAT, which could’ve possibly been the difference maker, but you never know what could’ve happened after that. Maybe this game doesn’t even go into OT. The other miscue for the 49ers was a muffed punt that set up a Chiefs score in the third quarter. That’s not on Purdy or a Kyle Shanahan clock management issue; it’s a wild bounce and sometimes that just happens.
Let’s talk about the offenses and the OT drives.
👀Mahomes finished 34 of 46 for 333 yards and had 2 touchdowns and 1 interception last night. The best drive Mahomes had was the final drive, where he was 8 for 8 for 42 yards and a TD. Mahomes had multiple rushes that kept the drive alive as well. Mahomes also connected with Travis Kelce 9 times for 93 yards, although Kelce did not have a TD catch in this game. It was a great misdirection play call by Andy Reid to win the Super Bowl with a 3-yard toss to Mecole Hartman for the TD.

👍️ I’m still giving a thumbs up to Purdy, although he wasn’t perfect. Purdy was 23 of 38 for 255 yards and 1 TD. The 49ers did use a trick play where Jauan Jennings threw a TD pass to Christian McCaffrey. In OT, Purdy made a few throws, but it was CMC who collected 48 of the 66 yards on offense before SF had to settle for a field goal. Looking back, I’m sure the Niners would’ve liked to have just gone for it, but you can’t risk not getting points when Patrick Mahomes is getting the ball next. I guess the real issue was why the Niners even chose to take the ball in the first place.
Back-to-back champs, I guess anything is possible when you have Patrick Mahomes as your quarterback.
Before we move on, let’s check in on how those bets from yesterday did. If you placed all of our player props, you would’ve finished with almost even money. We did tell you it was a heads coin toss type of day, though, so hopefully, you put that in!
✔️ Christian McCaffrey under 89.5 rushing yards -110
✔️ CMC over 33.5 receiving yards -110
❌ Isiah Pacheco over 67.5 rushing yards -110
❌ Brock Purdy over 12.5 rushing yards -110
❌ Chris Jones to record a sack +132
✔️ Travis Kelce over 6.5 receptions -110
We’ll be better next year. 👍️
Waste Management Open
The Peoples Open became a paradox over the weekend. While the gates were literally open, everything else was practically closed. Normally, the WM Open brings in over half a million spectators over the five days of events. We’ve had numbers of around 700,000 spectators before. Just on Saturday alone, it was estimated that 500,000 people were on the premises, and it was so hectic they could not even check tickets anymore. Gates were open to everyone, and due to the hectic nature of the events, the venue had to close concessions, including alcohol sales, just to entice some fans to dissipate. After all the craziness, we settle into a final round on Sunday.
While there’s no OT clock(sort of) on the PGA Tour, the tournament did come to playoff holes between Canadian Nick Taylor and San Diegan Charley Hoffman. Nick Taylor had a spectacular first-round 60, propelling him high onto the leaderboard for the next few rounds. Although Taylor finished with a an impressive 65 in the final round, Charley Hoffman showed off by going low with a 64 in the last two rounds. These guys would separate themselves from the rest of the groups, finish -21 after four rounds, and have to play two extra holes to settle the match.
Nick Taylor won the event after hitting a birdie putt on 18 for the 2nd time in the playoff round. Taylor birdied 5 of his final six holes to get the W.
Congrats to the Canadian for the win, especially as a very small amount of Americans watched the playoff round with the SB on. Taylor will take home $1,584,000 with the win. I’m not converting to CAD.
Wait, The NBA Played Yesterday?
The NBA had some afternoon games on yesterday in a smart move to not try and compete with the NFL. Here’s how the two games played out
🏀 The Boston Celtics traveled to Miami and beat the Heat 110-106. Jayson TAtum scored 26 points, had 10 rebounds, and 9 assists in the win.
🏀 The Sacramento Kings fell to the OKC Thunder 127-113. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 38 for the Thunder, and Sacramento got another triple-double from Domantas Sabonis, who finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists.
Don’t worry about what’s on TV tonight. We’ll be back tomorrow to talk some more sports, and later in the week, we’ll be discussing Tiger Wood’s making his 2024 golf debut.
Enjoy your Monday!
