A Dime A Dozen: What It Means and How It Cost The Bills a Win
Happy Tuesday, Especially for Broncos Nation who is riding their horses to work this morning feeling real good about being 4-5. Let’s chat about last night’s game and what’s been going down in the other leagues.
LET’S RIDE!
A DIME A DOZEN
The Denver Broncos have made the halfway turn to what is the NFL race to the playoffs and they have won 3 in a row. Are the Broncos going to make the playoffs? It’s unlikely. Did the Broncos score more touchdowns last night than Nathaniel Hackett’s (OC of Jets) offense has scored in the last 3 weeks, YUP!
This isn’t about the Jets though, this is about another the other AFC East team that is letting the season slowly slip out of their grasp. The Bills had a 1-point lead last night and on 2nd and 4 with 36 seconds on the clock, they sacked Russell Wilson. Now it’s 3rd and 10 and Russ throws a ball up and the Bills get called for a PI. Fast forward to 4 seconds left and the Broncos sent up a 41-yard attempt field goal attempt and Wil Lutz missed it.
BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!
The Bills were switching out of their Dime package and bringing on their field goal unit and they brought TWELVE guys out. YOU CAN’T DO THAT!
The Bills were assessed a 5-yard penalty and Wil Lutz had another shot, this time from 36 yards out and he drilled it down the middle for the 24-22 win.
Josh Allen was 15/26 for 177. He threw 1 TD but had 2 costly errors where he threw 2 interceptions.
Russell Wilson was 24/29 (82.7%) for 193. He threw 2 TDs.
It’s very simple when it comes to the NFL and I think a lot of games come down to 3 things if you want to be competitive. You need to be healthy, you can’t drastically lose the turnover battle, and you can’t have big penalties in big moments. 2 of those you can control, the other you can’t.
The Bills are banged up on defense, they had 2 big penalties at the end of the game, and on top of Josh Allen’s INTs, James Cook and Allen both lost a fumble, giving the Broncos the edge in the turnover battle.
The Buffalo Bills have lost 3 of their last 4 and they really needed last night as a W. The Bills are 5-5 and they still have to face a tough Jets defense, the Eagles, Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers, Dolphins, and a Patriots team that they already lost to once.
Check out last night’s highlights here.
Catching Up With The NBA
We’re filled with football most of the week so let’s check in with some top NBA headlines.
🏀 Nuggets head coach Mike Malone has agreed to a contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league.
🏀 The Bucks will be without Jae Crowder for 2 months as he suffered an abdominal tear and adductor tear in a game on Saturday
🏀 De’Aaron Fox returned to the court after being out with an ankle injury for two weeks. Fox scored 28 points for the Sacramento Kings in coach Mike Brown’s 400th career win.
🏀76ers guard Kelly Oubre Jr. broke a rib when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene Saturday night. Tyrese Maxey dedicated an epic performance to Oubre last night when Maxey scored 50 points to beat the Paers 137-126.
🏀 The LA Clippers are 0-4 since James Harden has played with his new team. Harden’s former team, the 76ers, are not missing him on bit as the Sixers are 8-1 on the season.
🏀We’ve got a number of games tonight and they are all part of the In-Season Tournament schedule. Check it out here.
News From The Ice
🏒 The Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its 2023 class yesterday. It included Henrik Lundqvist, Pierre Turgeon, Mike Vernon, Tom Barrasso, Caroline Ouellette, Ken Hitchcock, and Pierre Lacroix.
🏒 The Edmonton Oilers fired coach Jay Woodcroft on Sunday. The Oilers made the call after they lost four straight and 8 of their last 9 games before a win on Saturday. Edmonton hired Kris Knoblauch from the Rangers AHL affiliate. Knoblauch actually coached Edmonton star and top NHL’er Connor McDavid on his junior team in the OHL.
🏒 Get your wallets out, it’s time to own the dopest jersey in the NHL. The Carolina Hurricanes are going to sport throwback Hartford Whalers jerseys on February 10 in a matchup vs. the NJ Devils. It’s a bit rude to leave the city of Hartford in 1997 but bring back the jerseys to the new city because they look cool. Whatever!
🏒 It’s early in the season but we’re already starting to see some separation in the divisions. The Bruins are the clear leader in the Atlantic and possibly the best team in the entire NHL. The Dallas Stars and the Colorada Avalanche are atop the Central Division. The Vegas Golden Knights are holding on to last year’s success as they lead the Pacific Division, but they’re followed closely by a talented Vancouver team. Is the Metropolitan division the best division in the league? That’s what some people think.
📺️ We’ve got a whole list of games on ESPN+ tonight. Check them out here.

p.s. Were you actually wondering where the term a dime a dozen came from? There are a few different origin stories but the main thought is it comes from when people bought a dozen of eggs in the early 1800s. It would cost a dime a dozen. The other thought is that groceries used to be sold by the dozen, so a bag of apples would have 12 apples and cost a dime. Over the years it came to describe something that is common, inexpensive, or easily attainable… kind of like a Bills loss. 😁
