An Eight Year Drought Ended

Today's Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes and 37 Seconds

Hola! We are 2 weeks away from having college football on Saturdays and we’re ready to scratch the itch.

Our Saturdays will look different in two weeks but this is what we got today.

  • The End of an 8-year drought

  • Messi Continues Scoring Streak

  • Two Tennis Upsets

  • The ACC Is at a Roadblock

  • FedEx St. Jude Championship Update

Here we go.

8 Year Drought Ended

I’m biased, I know. Normally I wouldn’t consider there to be any cool stories coming out of Houston but this one is the exception

The Houston Astros’ Jon Singleton ended an 8-year home run drought last night in his first at-bat and then homered in the next at-bat. Here’s why it’s cool.

Singleton was out of the league in 2015 and didn’t start back up his baseball career until 2021 when he played in a Mexican League (catching Kenny Powers vibes over here).

Singleton had failed three drug tests when he was a top prospect of the Astros. He received a 100-game suspension and his young career would go on pause.

He was released by Houston, opened a gym, then dominated in the batter’s box in the Mexican League, then dominated in the batter’s box in the minors for Milwaukee’s farm team, played some games for Milwaukee, and then ended up back in the Astros system. 8 years receiving his 100 game suspension he’s knocking balls over the fence.

Checking In On Messi

Almost another week has gone by with Messi playing for Inter Miami and it checks out. He’s still really good.

Maybe we’ll just continue to do weekly check-ins like this. Hmmm.

Anyways, he scored his 8th goal in 5 games and has helped Miami get to the semis in the Leagues Cup.

Two Tennis Upsets

The No.1 and No.3 tennis players in the world fell in the National Bank Open Quarterfinals last night in Toronto.

No.1 and recent Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz fell to the American Tommy Paul when Paul took the first and the final set 6-3(reminder: tennis is best of 3 sets unless it’s a Grand Slam, then it’s best of 5 for the men).

No.3 (but 2 seeded at the tournament) Daniil Medvedev dropped to Australia’s Alex de Minuar after Medvedev had 7 double faults, with one coming on the last match point.

A Landmass For A Roadblock

The ACC had a vote to add Cal and Stanford to the conference but the votes fell short. 4 schools opposed the addition and they were Florida State, North Carolina, Clemson, and NC State.

It sounds like the appeal is there to add the West Coast schools from an academic and Olympic sports perspective but there is a major lack of appeal when it comes to football, finances, and cross-country travel.

FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Lucas Glover stole the show yesterday when he posted a 6 under round to grab a one-shot lead over Jordan Spieth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Glover, who is 43 years old, was ranked 112th in the FedEx Cup standing but made it inside the top 70 after his big win at the Wyndham Championship last Sunday.

Glover and Spieth will be heading out at 12:50 pm ET for the third round. Let’s see if either of them can hold their spot at the top of the leaderboard as others like Rory, Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, and Scottie Scheffler try to catch up as they are all less than 3 strokes behind.
