That Was A Fast Break
Today's Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes and 29 Seconds
Good Morning and most importantly, HAPPY FRIDAY!
We’ve got all types of stories for you, from the UK to Chicago, we’re talking golf, tennis, football, baseball, and maybe more.
Let’s get to the action and speed up those clocks because 4 pm can’t come soon enough.
Fast Break
We’re not talking about that type of fast break. We’re talking Major League Baseball. What a quick All-Star break that was with players getting 5 days off. We’re back with the 2nd half of the season and every MLB team is playing today.
We’ve got an August 1 trade deadline and quite a few teams who honestly, just aren’t great right now and the expectations are high. Think Phillies, Yankees, Angels, Mets. These teams have tremendous talent yet they are sitting outside of the playoffs in the current standings.
Expect some moves over the next 2 weeks, we’ll keep you updated.
Wimbledon Semifinals
The semifinals are set for Wimbledon and the Men’s bracket is settling exactly like you’d expect.
No. 2 Novak Djokovic is battling it out with No. 8 Jannik Sinner this morning. The winner of this match will go on to the final match and face the winner of the 10:30 am ET match between No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 3 Daniil Medvedev.
In the Women’s singles bracket, we have some Cinderella stories developing. Marketa Vondrousova defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets and No. 6 Ons Jabeur came back after being down 1-0 to defeat Aryna Sabalenka. Jabeur and Vondrousova will face off on Center Court tomorrow morning in the final match.
Genesis Scottish Open
We could talk every day about the drama between the PGA Tour and LIV but you know we don’t like drama.
What we do like is to talk about how hard this game is and how good the players are and how easy they make it look.
An Byeong-Hun showed up in Scotland yesterday, shooting his best score on the PGA Tour. He went 9 under in the first round with 9 birdies. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s about scoring fewer bogeys because 18 pars weren’t getting it done yesterday.
The best part about golf is yesterday doesn’t really matter if you don’t go out and play well again. You’ve got a few other golfers looking to chase down the lead. Rory is only 3 strokes behind the lead after 1 round and Max Homa, Rickie Fowler, and even Padraig Harrington are in a position to chase down the lead with a good round. It’s shaping up to be a competitive weekend of golf.
Clean Up On Lake Shore Drive
Northwestern University is cleaning up the campus in Chicago and when we say cleaning up the campus we mean they are firing all of their coaches.
The school just fired long-time football coach Pat Fitzgerald after a lengthy investigation regarding hazing practices.
There was a concurrent investigation looking into their baseball coach Jim Foster after there were allegations of bullying.
The school fired Foster yesterday after they found evidence that the coach “engaged in bullying and abusive behavior.”
Jamahal Hill Injury
Jamahal Hill, the UFC’s light heavyweight division champion had a devastating injury. The 32-year-old fighter ruptured his achilles and has now relinquished his champion belt as he’ll be out for a while to recover.
Hill grabbed the belt 6 months ago after defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 283.
FRIDAY = PAYDAY
The New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams JUST GOT PAID.
Williams is signing a four-year deal with the Jets that includes $66 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $96 million with incentives. He was the no. 3 pick in the 2019 NFL draft and has been the strength of the Jets’ defense the last few years.
