First Round Friday

Good Morning and Happy St. Patrick’s Day 🍀. We’re the Daily Breakroom and we’re here to catch you up on the action in less than 5 minutes.

Here’s what we got for today:

🏀 Thursday NCAA games

🏀 Friday NCAA games

🏈 NFL Free Agency (the Long and the Short)

Let’s get this show on the road.

Thursday Games

Thursday was the tip-off of the first round games in the NCAA tournament. You can’t have the first day of the tournament without some upsets and more importantly, busted brackets.

The first major upset of the day came when Virginia lost to Furman. Furman stole a pass when they were down 2 points with six seconds left and hit a 3-pointer, leaving two seconds on the clock. Virginia had a last effort shot at the basket from about 40 feet out but couldn’t connect. Watch it go down.

The biggest stunner of the day was 15 seed Princeton beating 2 seed Arizona 59-55. Princeton took a 56-55 lead with 2 minutes to go in the game and held Arizona scoreless on the Wildcats final possessions.

9 seed Auburn took down 8 seed Iowa. It’s still technically an upset but we expect these ones to happen.

10 seed Penn State let 7 seed Texas A&M have it on Thursday night. The Nittany Lions defeated the Aggies 76-59.

NFL Free Agency

We know not everyone wants to be super dialed into free agency so we’ll do this in two parts. We’ll do a big moves section and then get into a deeper dive. Feel free to take this journey as you see fit.

Big Interest, Signings, and Releases
  • Odell Beckham Jr. is being looked at by the Ravens, Chiefs, and Cowboys

  • Jimmy Garoppolo was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders after they split ways with Derek Carr. Jimmy G. will be reunited with head coach Josh McDaniels.

  • Star CB Darius Slay is signing a 2-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles and Philly fanatics should be pleased with this.

  • RB Miles Sanders is heading to the Carolina Panthers after 4 seasons with the Eagles

  • WR Juju Smith-Schuster has been signed by the NE Patriots.

  • QB Baker Mayfield has signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • QB Jacoby Brissett has signed with Washington Commanders

  • RB Ezekiel Elliott has been released by the Dallas Cowboys

  • Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t been traded to the Jets. Things are looking a bit more complicated. We’ll keep you updated on this, as always.

  • Lamar Jackson still hasn’t reach a deal with any other team or the Baltimore Ravens after being franchise tagged. Teams that could be a suitor for Jackson are signing other free agent QBs. It’s likely due to a combination of Jackson price tag and his inability to close out a season while remaining healthy.

If you feel like that high level was good enough for you, feel free to jump to the end.

If you want some more let’s. jump. into. the.

Nitty Gritty
  • The Chicago Bears sign TE, Robert Tonyan. He’s another skill weapon that can help the offense in the redzone as the Bears have Cole Kmet at TE and just got WR DJ Moore in their draft pick trade. Hopefully the Bears use their picks to bolster that OL.

  • The Colts signed veteran Gardner Minshew to a one year deal. Can we call Minshew a veteran yet? Anyways, we’re expecting the Colts to take a QB with the 4th overall pick in April. Minshew should be a good role model in the meeting rooms and help bring a rookie up to speed with the playbook

  • The NY Giants have resigned their leading receiver Darius Slayton to a 2 year deal. Good for the G-Men as they will need someone familiar for Danny Dimes as he tries to show that his big contract was worth it.

  • The Giants’ wide receiver core is recovering from injuries so they signed Parris Campbell to get Daniel Jones some more help. Campbell struggled with injuries the last few years but stayed healthy in 2022. We’ll see if he can do the same in New York.

  • Seahawks signed former Lions backup offensive lineman Evan Brown. Brown started in some games in 2021 and 2022 to fill in for injured players. Brown might be the new center in Seattle as Austin Blythe retired this year.

  • Detroit loses one OL but they bring another back. They are signing a former draft pick of theirs to a 1 year deal. Graham Glasgow will be coming back to the Lions after spending a few years with the Broncos.

  • NE Patriots signed former Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki. They’ll have a dual TE attack again in Foxborough with Gesicki and Hunter Henry.

  • The Eagles replaced their lost backup(Minshew) with Marcus Mariota. This is a decent fit as Mariota’s skillset aligns with Hurts’. If Hurts’ goes down like he did at the end of the last year, this move should create some offensive continuity.

  • The NY Jets signed OL Wes Schweitzer. He plays center and guard and the Jets need to improve their OL if they are bringing 38 year old Aaron Rodgers over from the Packers.

There’s upwards of a hundred free agency moves already. We’ll continue to post any big moves when we hear about them but this should be a good starter for now.

That’s all for today. We hope you have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and can enjoy a pint when the day is done.

Slainte!
