A Giant Monday Night-mare
Good Morning and Happy Tuesday. We’ve got some Monday Night Football to discuss, the start of the MLB playoffs, and we’ll even dig into a little bit of college football.
Let’s jump right in.
Monday Night Football
Danny Dimes ain’t worth a penny! There, I said it!
I’ve talked about it before so sorry for the continued rant. I said it last season, during the preseason and at the beginning of the season.. I didn’t think the Giants would be any good and they had the easiest schedule in the league last year.
In all seriousness, the New York Giants are in trouble. They got whooped in Monday Night Football 24-3 by the Seattle Seahawks and they are now 1-3. Daniel Jones had a rough night and it wasn’t completely his fault. He was 27-34 throwing and it just happens that 2 of his incompletions were interceptions, with one being a pick 6. The pick 6 couldn’t have come at a worse time as the Giants were in the redzone looking to close a 14-3 gap in the 3rd quarter and Devon Witherspoon brought an INT back 97 yards to the house. It doesn’t help that Jones was also sacked 11 times by a good Seahawks defense. The Giants were held under 250 yards for the 2nd week in a row.
The Seahawks’ offense wasn’t much better as they only had 281 yards of total offense. We do recognize that the Seahawks were managing the game a bit to secure a W but Geno Smith only attempted 20 passes and completed 13 of them for 120 yards. He did throw a TD to D.K. Metcalf at the end of the 1st quarter.
It wasn’t all bad for New York. The Giants made some nice defensive plays and narrowly missed on what could’ve been some big plays. There were definitely some positives for the D.
Seattle’s head coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks’ defense was just getting started this year. Maybe there’s a new legion of boom in Seattle. Whatever it was, the defense needs to stay hungry as it’s a huge help to their offense, and the offense always needs help when you play in the NFC West.
…….
Let’s dig into the Giants a little more. (pun intended)
In 3 games against good opponents (i.e. not the Cardinals), the Giants are averaging 189 total yards of offense. Also, in those games, they are averaging 5 points per game. Add the Cardinals’ stats back in and the Giants are averaging 11.5 points per game, the lowest out of any team in the league. You’d have to go back 14 years to find a team averaging fewer points. Want to know who it was?
It was the 2009 St. Louis Rams! The Rams finished 1-15 that year.
Okay that’s enough sad news on the Giants for now, I’m sure they’ll be able to recover next week when they play the Dolphins. If not next week then maybe when they play the Bills the weekend after. (I hope the sarcasm is palpable)
MLB Playoffs
We’ve got the Wild Card round of playoffs starting today. Here’s what the schedule looks like.
AL Wild Card
Texas Rangers @ Tampa Bay Rays, 3 pm ET on ABC
Toronto Blue Jays @ Minnesota Twins, 4:30 pm ET on ESPN
NL Wild Card
Arizona Diamondbacks @ Milwaukee Brewers, 7 pm ET on ESPN2
Miami Marlins @ Philadelphia Phillies, 8 pm ET on ESPN
College Football Rankings
We’ve got an update to the college football rankings and the top 7 remained untouched. Here are a few changes.
Oregon moved ahead of USC after Oregon had another great showing against Stanford and USC’s defense allowed a late rally by Colorado
Notre jumped up a spot after a last-minute win at Duke
The Notre Dame loss cost Duke a 2 spot drop in the rankings.
LSU had the biggest drop after losing to Ole Miss in the final minute of the game. They moved from 13 to 23.
A 5-0 Louisville has moved into the rankings at #25

We’ve had quite the rundown of football the last few days so we’ll cut it short here.
We’ll catch up with you tomorrow.
