Good Morning from the Daily Breakroom. We’ve got lots to talk about this Monday morning. We had a wild USMNT showing on the pitch, golf coming down to the last few strokes, Wemby finding his way in summer league, players making their breakout moment on the tennis court, and Red Bull breaking records.

Let’s get right to it.

USMNT vs Canada

The United States defeated Canada 3-2 in penalty kicks last night to advance to the Gold Cup semifinals. It was a 0-0 match until the 88th minute when Brandon Vazquez scored the first goal of the match for the US. You almost couldn’t make this story up. The match was held in Cincinnati and Vazques plays for Cincinnati FC in the MLS. Everyone was chanting for him to be subbed into the match and when he came in he made an immediate impact.

Fast forward ahead 3 minutes into stoppage time and the US had an accidental handball in the offensive zone and Canada was awarded a penalty kick. Steven Vitoria would drive a ball straight down the middle and tie it up.

The game would eventually go into extra time and with only 11 minutes remaining, Canadian Jacob Shaffelburg would deliver a fantastic goal on a breakout play.

The Americans wouldn’t back down and goalkeeper Matt Turner would send a ball into the offensive zone that Gianluca Busio would take a shot on goal that would eventually be deflected by the goalkeeper and ricochet off a Canadian into their own goal.

BOOM! Game is tied 2-2 and now we’re heading into a shootout.

To start, Matt Turner was facing Steven Vitoria (who just delivered the ball down the middle on a PK 30 minutes ago) and Vitoria would try down the middle again only to be shut out by Turner. Turner would go on to save another ball and one more would hit the crossbar, giving USA the win.

The U.S. has reached the Gold Cup semifinals for the 12th consecutive time. They will face Panama in the semifinals on Wednesday.

We’ll drop highlights down below for everything.

Wimbledon

When it comes to Men’s singles, there’s no doubt we’ll be having some fantastic tennis over the coming days. Novak Djokovic’s match was suspended yesterday, but he’s up 2-0. Andrey Rublev won in 5 sets yesterday. We’ve got Danill Medvedev facing Jiri Lehecka in the round of 16 today with Stefanos Tsitsipas facing Christopher Eubanks one court over. This competition will be fierce for the men.

But there’s no better place than a major tennis tournament for a young female tennis player to become a star.

The tennis majors have consistently served as a platform for young talent to shine and make their mark on the international stage. These prestigious tournaments attract the world's top players and provide a stage where emerging stars can showcase their skills. We have witnessed numerous breakthrough performances by young players who capture hearts worldwide.

Think Serena Williams grabbing her first major win at the US Open, Maria Sharapova winning her first Major at Wimbledon. We might have another star player in the making.

16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva is grabbing attention in London. Andreeva is playing in her second career Grand Slam and she’s the youngest player to advance to the round of 16 since Coco Gauff did it in 2019. Andreeva is facing American Madison Keys today and will attempt to get to the quarterfinals. Keys is the No. 25-ranked player in the world, but that won’t give Andreeva any hesitation. Andreeva just defeated the No. 22 ranked player two days ago.

Wemby Getting Comfortable

Victor Wembanyama bounced back after a meek showing in his first NBA Summer League appearance. The No.1 draft pick / French phenom scored 27 points, had 12 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots last night. Glad to see improvement out of the young fella.

Golf, Golf, and More Golf

John Deere Classic

We mentioned yesterday that anyone could pull off a win at the John Deere Classic if they come in low and that’s precisely what happened. Sepp Straka shot a 62 during his final round on Sunday and that even came with a double bogey on 18. Straka would pass Brendan Todd and Alex Smalley and take home his 2nd career tour win.

US Women’s Open

The US Women’s Open certainly wasn’t guaranteed to anyone after 3 rounds. Nasa Hataoka had a meltdown on Sunday as she went 4 over par and dropped 3 places in the standing. At this point, American Allisen Corpuz just needed to put together a decent round to win and that’s exactly what she did. She was the only player to record a round under par all 4 days and she would win the US Open by three strokes.

LIV Golf

The LIV Golf event in London would finish in a less complex way than the other tours. Cam Smith would hold on by one stroke to grab the LIV win.

Red Bull Breaking Records

As we’ve said before, it’s better to just update you when Max Verstappen doesn’t win on the F1 circuit. What we should mention is that Red Bull just match McLaren’s all-time record with their 11th consecutive win on the circuit. Maybe we’ll do more on this later week, we’ll see.

MLB All-Star Week

MLB Draft

If you want full draft coverage, check it out here. Here’s what we want you to know. Picks 1 and 2 grabbed two big-time players from the LSU Tigers, who just won the College World Series.

The Pittsburgh Pirates grabbed right-handed Pitcher Paul Skenes with the first pick and the Washington Nationals took outfielder Dyland Crews.

Congrats to these dudes and Geaux Tigers.

Home Run Derby

The home run derby is set for tonight and there are 8 players ready to hit deep shots high above the space needle in Seattle. Tune into ESPN at 8 pm ET to watch the balls go back, back, back, back, back, gone.
