The Late Night Edition

In Under 3 Minutes

Welcome to the P.M. edition. No, this isn’t an everyday thing, but we’re delayed today and still had to make sure you didn’t miss any news!

We had college basketball upsets, college football issues, and scandals in the NHL. Stick with us for the next few minutes as we hit the refresh button and get ready for a Wednesday night in sports.

College Basketball Upset

🍝 Was it Italian night in the NCAA because we got served an extra side of upsetti spaghetti!

🏀 The first upset of the night came when the #3 North Carolina Tar Heels lost to Georgia Tech 74-73. It was a classic case of overlooking the opponent as UNC faces #7 Duke later this week in the first of the Tobacco Road rivalry games this season. RJ Davis scored 28 for the Heels, but Georgia Tech hung around just long enough for Naithan George to finish a beautiful layup for the game-winner.

🏀 Our next top 5 upset of the night came when South Carolina knocked off #5 Tennessee 63-59. Tennessee was 10-0 at home before last night, and they almost made it to 11-0 after Dalton Knecht scored 31 points, including 12 in the final 3 minutes. The Vols ultimately came up short, partially due to a poor free-throw shooting performance. Tennesse was 12 for today from the charity line.

Speaking of Tennessee

The Volunteers are apparently volunteering as tribute, Hunger Games style. The University of Tennessee has come under the NCAA investigative eye once again. They were just scrutinized by the committee of infractions last year, and the university cooperated with the investigation. Tennessee committed over 200 violations, including 18 major violations. Now, the university is in the crosshairs once again, this time for more violations, some including NIL issues.

We don’t need to get into all the details, like a recruit being allegedly guaranteed $8 million. What you need to know is Tennessee ain’t gonna stand for this. NOPE!

Tennessee is suing the NCAA for violating antitrust laws, stating that the NCAA limits the amount of money players can earn for their name, image, and likeness. It’s reported that the University of Florida might join in on the lawsuit too!

The NCAA is already facing a lawsuit by a group of state attorneys general challenging the association's transfer rules. It is also the defendant in antitrust suits targeting employment status for athletes and billions in television revenue that schools and conferences make off big-time college sports.

We’ll update you as we get more info!

NHL Scandal

Four NHL players face sexual assault charges related to an alleged group incident in 2018 in London, Ont., when they were members of Canada's World Junior hockey team. Another former NHLer, Alex Formenton, is a part of the alleged group.

Here’s the deal. There seems to be some possible criminal activity that took place in 2018. Hockey Canada had a slush fund to keep people hush-hush, and this wasn’t the first time it happened. Even though a settlement was reached with the woman involved, police and the NHL were launching their own investigations, and those seem to be complete. The players are claiming their innocence but are on leave from their teams. You can read more here.
