NFL Season Opener

Good Morning,

Let’s keep the intro short and sweet today. We’ve got 1 goal and 1 goal only. Get the to-do list checked off so you can sit your butt on the couch for the NFL opener tonight!

Let’s do this.

The Return of the NFL

Zero wins and zero losses. That’s how every NFL team starts out in week 1. The only expectation is to go out and win the first game and then you can focus on the next week.

Except the Kansas City Chiefs have more than week 1 expectations…They already know they’re defending a Super Bowl Trophy and it’s one of the hardest things to do in sports.

The Chiefs will face the Detroit Lions at 8:20 p.m. ET in Kansas City. The game will be broadcast on NBC so you can still watch it even with the Spectrum-Disney fiasco still going on.

The Chiefs are going to attempt to defend their title and week 1 is already going to be a test. Star TE Travis Kelce is likely sitting out with a knee injury. Their best defensive player Chris Jones is still holding out on his contract and that’s going to put the D-Line at a disadvantage (at least Jones’ better hope so).

The Detroit Lions closed out the season in a strong fashion last year, not that it’s exactly the same roster, but the momentum feels good. The Lions picked up RB David Montgomery in free agency, took RB Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the draft, and grabbed tight end Sam LaPorta in the third round, adding a good group of weapons to help QB Jared Goff.

There’s been lots of hype saying this is a new year for the Lions and they can grab a week 1 win, but I just can’t see it happening even with the absence of two key players for the Chiefs.

Betting on the game?

The odds have slipped again and the Chiefs are only 4.5-point favorites. The O/U is 53.

College Football Rankings

As we get closer to the college football weekend, we thought it would be worth going over the rankings for week 2.

Who moved up in the ranking?
  • Florida State climbed four places to No. 4 after a resounding victory over LSU. This is the first time they've been in the top five since 2017.

  • Duke made a significant jump into the rankings at No. 21 after a surprising victory against Clemson.

  • Colorado moved to No. 22 after a major upset victory against TCU, earning their first ranking since the 2020 season.

Who moved down?
  • LSU dropped nine spots to No. 14 after their loss to Florida State.

  • Clemson fell 16 places to No. 25 following their upset by Duke.

Who Got Bounced?
  • TCU, which lost to Colorado, dropped out of the rankings entirely after being No. 17 in the preseason but lost to Colorado in the season opener.

  • Texas Tech, who had a shocking loss on the road to Wyoming

Here’s the full top 25.

MLB News

We’re going to rapid-fire through some stories today and we’ll go over some playoff pictures in the coming days.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros showcased their hitting prowess against the Texas Rangers, securing a dominant 12-3 victory to complete a sweep in the pivotal three-game AL West series. José Abreu led the charge with a grand slam and a three-run blast, contributing to Houston's five homers in the game. This impressive performance put the Astros in sole possession of the AL West lead for the first time this season, edging ahead of Seattle by one game.

Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins defeated the LA Dodgers 11-4. Joey Wendle fell a triple short of a cycle. This is the Marlins' sixth consecutive victory and just moved them ahead of Cincinnati in the race for the final NL wild-card spot.

LA Dodgers

Speaking of the Dodgers, they have officially placed Julio Urias on administrative leave until further notice. Urias was arrested on Sunday night on a felony charge of domestic violence.

NY Yankees

The Yankees are on a 5 game-winning streak (sadly their longest all year) and have won eight of their last night. They are over 500 for the first time in 3 weeks and 6.5 games out of the wild card.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox fell to the Tampa Bay Rays last night 3-1 after Rays’ pitcher Tyler Glasnow struck out 14 batters in 6 innings pitched. The Sox are 5 games out of the wild card picture and have a 3 games series against the Baltimore Orioles who are the best team in the AL.

Ryder Cup Rosters

The European Ryder Cup team for the 2023 matches in Rome boasts a formidable lineup of automatic qualifiers. 6 players earn their spots through exceptional play and those players are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, and Robert MacIntyre.

The European Team Captain, Luke Donald gets 6 captain’s picks and he’s made his choice. Donald announced his choices the other day and he has selected Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Ludvig Aberg, Sepp Straka, and Nicolai Hojgaard.

Some say this European team can’t match up against the US team. I guess we’ll find out when golfers tee it up on Friday, September 29th.

Enjoy the game tonight, we’ll see you tomorrow!
