+ Is Trey Lance A Bust?
It’s Thursday and you know what that means. We’ve got Golf! We’ve also got some MLB updates, and NFL roster news.
Let’s jump right in.
Major League Baseball
Shohei Ohtani Is Injured
Shohei Ohtani is done pitching for the 2023 season. He came out of yesterday’s doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds and got an MRI which showed Ohtani has a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. The UCL is usually what pitchers get repaired with Tommy John surgery and it’s also the same ligament Brock Purdy tore in the NFC Championship for the 49ers(more on Brock later).
Ohtani being the grinder that he is, still stepped in as the DH in the second game of the day, going 1 for 5.
Shohei already underwent Tommy John in 2018, and UCL injuries are pretty common when throwing at such high velocities. Ohtani is entering free agency this year and with his pitcher and hitting capabilities, some think he could get a $600 million contract.
Imagine trading for Ohtani and then this happens 3 weeks after the deadline… or imagine giving him a $600 million contract next year and then this happens! That would crush fans.
We won’t see Ohtani on the mound for the rest of 2023 but let’s hope he keeps pummeling the ball from the batters box.
Aaron Judge Helps Yankees Get Out Of Slump
The Yankees were on their worst losing streak since 1982 and if they lost last night, it would’ve made it a 10-loss streak. That would’ve been the worst since 1913.
Aaron Judge was there to make sure that didn’t happen as he joined the 3-HRs in a game club and helped carried the Yankees to a 9-1 win over the Washington Nationals. Judge had 6 RBIs on the night, including 4 that came from a 5th-inning grand slam.
GRAND SLAM AARON JUDGE! TWO HOMERS IN TWO INNINGS! 6-0 YANKEES!

Red Sox Grab A Win In Houston
The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of a 4 game series in Houston and working to climb into a wild-card spot. The Red Sox dropped the first two games in the series but came back last night with an extra-innings win when Adam Duvall hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 10th just moments after painfully fouling a ball off of his foot.
Duvall has recorded a homer in his last 3 games.
Adam Duvall for 3!!!

The 49ers Name Their Starting QB
It’s no surprise that after winning every game you started and finished you would be named the starting QB of your squad. The Niners have named Brock Purdy as their starter but more surprisingly they have named Sam Darnold as their backup.
That means that the 2021 no.3 overall draft pick, Trey Lance is now the 3rd string QB. Lance was the starter last year but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in week 2. The 49ers are considering all options for Lance. It might be smart to keep him around as the 49ers QBs seem to be as fragile as a snowman in the hot summer sun.
Here’s a question…Is it too early to call Trey Lance a bust? He’s only 23 and I assume he’s going to get a starting job on another roster at some point. I guess we can wait.
Jonathan Taylor Given A Deadline
The Indianapolis Colts have given star RB Jonathan Taylor until Tuesday to get a trade offer that the Colts would accept. It seems the Dolphins might be the best spot for Taylor and the Dolphins are looking to win now so they’ll likely give up what the Colts are looking for when it comes to value. Check out this ESPN article for all the potential landing spots.
Chris Jones Is A Beast But The Math Doesn’t Check Out
Chris Jones, DT for the KC Chiefs, is ready to hold out until at least week 8 for a contract extension. He’s in the last year of his current contract and is set to make $20 million. He reportedly wants a contract that pays him closer to $30 mil a year. He’ll probably get that in free agency next year.
If the goal is to make more money how does sitting out until week 8 and losing over $8 million make sense?
PGA Tour Championship
The Tour Championship, which is the final playoff round in the FedEx Cup and the last event of the PGA season is teeing it up today.
This event brings an interesting start, but let’s discuss how we got here first.
2 weeks ago we had the FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship, where the top 70 golfers in FedEx Cup points faced off. The top 50 in points after that weekend would move on
That brought us to last week’s tournament, the BMW Championship, where the top 50 teed it up and only the top 30 advance.
So now it’s time for the top 30 to tee it up, but there’s a catch. Golf is hard, and you can play good all year and have one bad tournament and BOOM you’re out of the picture. So to reward the players who have played the best all year and “even” the playing field, the top golfers start out with extra strokes. You get the idea.
Here’s how many strokes each golfer is getting.

Scottie Scheffler started at the top with 10 strokes last year but Rory would win his third FedEx Cup title and $18 million. Can Scottie hold off the field this year and get the big money? There’s only one way to find out.
Tune in and see who'll get crowned the top golfer of 2023.

Quick Footie Update
There’s a lot of mid-season things going on in the MLS right now and one of them is the US Open Cup. Last night in semis, Inter Miami faced FC Cincinnati and while Lionel Messi didn’t score for the first time since he’s been playing for Miami, he still had two assists that helped the team tie it up in stoppage time and would help Inter Miami win on penalties.
Be honest, is this actually fun for Messi? This feels like LeBron deciding to play D3 basketball. At least we get some dope highlights every 3 days!
