One Wild Weekend In Sports
It’s been three days since we talked, and boy, does it feel like it’s been two weeks with the amount of action that took place.
Maybe it was just the adrenaline rush as Bryson escaped with a US Open win as Rory McIlroy missed a 3-foot putt on 18. Or maybe it’s the fact that both Dallas Mavericks and Edmonton Oilers had the most insane performances in game 4s that will likely never be remembered because they both will still probably lose their finals series.
Let’s dig into these stories, and then we’ll look at some other important topics to finish the day.
US Open Championship
Rory McIlroy was so close to ending his 10-year major drought after he led in the final round of the US Open by two strokes. Then the unthinkable happened. Rory bogeyed 3 of the final 4 four holes, two of which included missing putts from just inside 4 feet. Remarkably, after 4 days of golf the difference between winning and losing comes down 274 and 275 total strokes.
Some people are already saying that Rory lost this more than Bryson won it, and while we understand the thinking, it’s only part of the story. DeChambeau started the day with a three-shot lead, but he and McIlroy were tied after the latter made birdies on 9 and 10. DeChambeau regained the lead with a birdie of his own on No. 10.
McIlroy birdied Nos. 12 and 13, and was two ahead after DeChambeau bogeyed the 12th hole. With Rory making bogeys and Bryson having birdied 13 and 14, it all came down to 18 when Bryson had a 50-yard shot from a bunker for his third.

Bryson had an epic up and down from the bunker and got himself a sandy par for the W. Helluva finish.
It’s a great story as Bryson wins his second major and his second US Open and it’s more heartbreak for Rory as he finishes second in consecutive US Opens. I know Rory wants to win another major but on the bright side, he did just win $2.3 million for coming in second. Brysons win’s win gets him a $4.3 million payday.
NBA Finals
I’m unsure how to describe what happened on Friday night in Dallas. The Mavericks beat the Celtics 122-84 in game 4 to avoid a sweep. This is the third-largest win margin in a Finals game.
It proved the Celtics are mortals after they were on a 10-game playoff win streak. It was a desperation game for the Mavs, and game 5 is back in Boston, but it shows that Dallas can run with Boston if they come out with intensity.
Still, no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit, and even though Jason Kidd said that Dallas has nothing to lose, you better believe that the Celtics want to win this in 5 in front of their home crowd.
Game 5 is tonight at 8:30 pm on ABC.
Stanley Cup Finals
Just when you thought you couldn’t describe a finals performance in the NBA, the NHL follows it up with a wild performance the night after.
The Edmonton Oilers did everything they could to avoid getting swept in the finals, and we mean everything.
The Oilers beat the Florida Panthers on Saturday night 8-1. Dylan Holloway scored twice, Connor McDavid surpassed Wayne Gretzyky’s record for assists in the postseason, and the 7 goal margin was the largest in almost 100 years.
The Oilers have only scored four goals in their first three games and then got goals from 7 players in game 4. Game 5 heads back to Florida where the Panthers will want to win this one in front of their home crowd.
The Oilers have avoided a sweep, but can they get this thing to a game 7? It’s happened before in the NHL, and it seems more likely to happen here than in the NBA.
To get to a game 6 or 7, you’ll need to play game 5 and that is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 pm on ABC.
Other Headlines
🏈 The Kansas City Chiefs are becoming Super Bowl Villains, but not because of the on-the-field reasons. DL Isaiah Buggs has been arrested for the 2nd time in Alabama, this time on domestic violence and burglary charges. It’s being said that he’s undergoing a smear campaign because he owns a hooka lounge in Tuscaloosa, and someone wants to close it down. WR Rashee Rice is facing a bunch of felony charges for a car crash in Dallas, and two OL were arrested in Kansas last month on marijuana charges.
⚾️ Mookie Betts has been having an MVP season for the LA Dodgers. He’ll now miss time after fracturing his hand yesterday when he was hit with a 97 mph fastball. He will not require surgery.
⚾️ The Dodgers suffer another short term loss as newly signed pitcher aka the $325 million man, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is out with a rotator cuff injury. He has been placed on the 15-day IR list.
⛳️There is extra drama surrounding the US Open after Rory McIlroy left without congratulating Bryson. Rory just took off with his team after the disappointing finish.
That should just about do it for today. We’ll catch up with you Wednesday where me might possibly have a new NBA Championship or a new Stanley Cup winner.
Have a great start to the week.
