Oprah Does Free Agency
Good Morning. This is the Daily Breakroom. It was a slow Monday in the sports world so we’ll dive into some free agency topics.

Here’s what we got for Tuesday Morning
🏈NFL Free Agency
🏀 Giannis Injury
⚾️ Ohtani’s Future
🏒 NHL Trade Deadline
Let’s get to it.
NFL Free Agency
Starting today, NFL teams have until March 7 to designate players with the Franchise or Transition tag. For those looking to understand the types of tags, we’ll explain below.
Non-exclusive: Teams must offer the selected player a one-year contract no less than the average of the top-five cap hits of that player’s positions or 120% of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. A player can negotiate with other teams and their current team will have the opportunity to match. If the team does not match, they will receive two first round draft picks in exchange.
Exclusive: Teams must offer the selected player a one-year contract no less than either the average of the top-five salaries at that player’s position based on April of the current year or 120% of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. If a player doesn’t accept the offer, they can’t negotiate with other teams.
Transition tags are similar to franchise tags with two exceptions. Rather than top-five, transition tags use the average of the top-10 highest players at a position and don’t provide any guaranteed compensation clause.
Here are the biggest names who could get franchised this year.
Starting today, NFL teams can designate their Franchise or Transition Players.
Franchise tag candidates include Lamar Jackson, Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Geno Smith, Tony Pollard, Dalton Schultz, Orlando Brown Jr., Jessie Bates, Daron Payne and Josh Jacobs.

Giannis Injury
Giannis Antetokounmpo, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and is the best basketball player in the world right now, injured his wrist last week when he attempted to block a shot at the backboard and landed awkwardly. It was feared he would require surgery and would be out for an extended time. After further testing it was determine he did not suffer any serious damage and will return to the court when swelling and pain subsides.
Will Ohtani Return to the Angels?
The 2023 season may be Shohei “Shotime” Ohtani’s last year with the LA Angels. Ohtani’s contract with the Angels expires at the end of the season and he is planning to explore free agency. Ohtani is a versatile player who is one of the best pitchers in the league and can do damage from the batters box. He can hit home runs and get on base, something we rarely see from a starting pitchers. It will be interesting to see how his year unfolds. If it’s anything like the last two, Ohtani will be getting a big pay day, whether he returns to his current team or not.
NHL Trade Deadline
The NHL trade deadline is only 10 days away. We’ll be covering trades over the next week and a half and expect some moves from teams who are looking to make a serious push in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Check out some trade rumors here.
Here’s a little bonus for you. Check out this save from New York Islander’s goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin.
