Overtime Upset + San Frustrations

Hey!

Welcome to a Tuesday edition of the Daily Breakroom. We’ve got an OT upset to cover; we need to chat about some of the conditions leading up to the Super Bowl, and we’ve also got a couple of great NBA performances and some NHL scores to run through!

Let’s get moving and get you out of here in under four minutes!

VAMOS!

Overtime Upset

👀 It was the 300th matchup between rivals Kansas and Kansas State. Kansas is the #8 team in the nation (they’ll drop now), and they traveled to the Octogan of Doom, where they were upset by K-State. It was a game that went into OT tied up 64-64.

👉️ Kansas State got their biggest break of the night when they outscored Kansas 11-6 in OT to win 75-70. Neither team could pull apart the entire night, but Tylor Perry took care of business in the extra 5 minutes and scored 8 of his 26 points for the night.

⌛️ Here’s a little stat for you. K-State is 6-0 in OT this season. Could they be a sneaky team later in the year with the ability to close out games?

🧽 The real winner in this game. The staff of Kansas has found the ultimate stain remover that took blood right off a jersey last night. WTF is this, and why is it so good?

NBA Top Performers

👉️ Anthony Davis grabbed his third career triple double last night in a Lakers win agaisnt the Charlotte Hornets. Davis had 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists. D’Angelo Russell and LeBron James both finished with 28 and 26 points, respectively. Miles Bridges balled out for the Hornets and scored 41 points; it just wasn’t enough.

👉️ Brandon Ingram scored 41 points for the New Orleans Pelicans in a 138-100 routing of the Toronto Raptors

👉️ There was a thriller in Atlanta between the Hawks and the Clippers last night. The Clippers would beat the Hawks 149-144, and Kawhi Leonard would lead the way for LA with 36 points, and James Harden finished with 30 points. De’Andre Hunter led the Hawks's scoring effort from the bench with 27 points.

👉️Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points in a Cleveland Cavaliers 136-110 win over the Sacramento Kings. Sacramento had a pretty poor showing, But Domantas Sabonis had a triple-double with 12 points, 19 rebounds, and 15 assists. He did it all in just 21 minutes of play.

Super Bowl Frustrations

👀The 49ers are kicking off Super Bowl preparations with complaints about the UNLV practice field. Players and coaches are deeming it too soft and poorly prepared, blaming late sod placement for potential footing issues. Kyle Shanahan plans to stay put after seeking alternative fields to practice on.

👉️ The NFL claims the field meets safety standards and improves daily, downplaying concerns about softness. The NFL players association is challenging NFL Commish Roger Goodell and is backing the players, which is no surprise. This isn’t the first time a team has complained about the field. Last year’s Super Bowl field had players slipping around the field after the field was slid inside at State Farm Stadium.

📺️ Check out Pat McAfee and Adam Schefter discussing this.

NHL Returns To The Ice

The NHL has returned from the All-Star break, and we had two matchups last night.

👉️ The New York Rangers defeated the Colorado Avalanche in a 2-1 OT win last night at MSG. Nathan MacKinnon scored the game's first goal and gave the Avalanche the 1-0 lead for most of the game. Artemi Panarin would tie it up for the Rangers in the 3rd period, and then Alexis Lafreniere would score the game-winner in OT on a little play that was set up by goalie Jonathan Quick.

🏒 🏒 🏒 🏒 🏒

⌛️ The New York Islanders took it down to the final minutes of last night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Islanders had a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period, and John Tavares would tie up on a power play for the Leafs with 4:48 left in action. It looked like this could go to OT, but Pierre Engvall would score the game-winner for the Islanders with just 2 minutes left to play.
