Overtimes, comebacks, and shot callers aka a normal Tuesday
That was an exhausting Tuesday night of sports. I don’t mean for the players playing. I mean for the fans. We had everything you could want for a Tuesday, so let’s dig in.
Overtimes in the NHL
Carolina Hurricanes 3 | New York Rangers 4
It took 27 minutes and 24 seconds of extra for this game to be decided. That’s right. We had two overtimes at MSG. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of 3 periods. The Hurricanes were putting a redirect showcase with their goals, and the Rangers’ Alexis Lafreniere was sniping the puck in the first two periods. It looked like Carolina would get a game 2 win as they were up 3-2 in the 3rd period, but Chris Kreider was persistent on an early power play and scored the game-tying goal.
It took a 2nd OT power play for Vincent Trocheck to score the game-winner for the Rangers.
As great as a 2 OT game was, the goaltending was even better. Igor Shesterkin made 57 saves for the Rangers, and Frederik Andersen made 39 saves for Carolina.
Rangers lead this series 2-0, and game 3 will be in Raleigh. Check out highlights of the game right here.
Colorado Avalanche 4 | Dallas Stars 3
As you watched the first OT in the Rangers game, you couldn’t help but notice the scoreboard for this game at the top right of the screen of the Rangers game. Every few minutes, the Stars added a goal in the first period, and it looked like this was going to be a blowout.
The Stars scored 3 goals in the first period and a 3-0 lead, and then they went dry. The Avalanche scored two goals in the 2nd period, and then Nathan MacKinnon scored the game-tying goal less than 30 minutes into the 3rd period.
Miles Wood would score the game-winning goal 11 minutes into the extra period after winning a race on the ice to get a puck in the offensive zone and hit the backhander.
These NBA Games Weren’t Even Fair Last Night
Cleveland Cavaliers 95 | Boston Celtics 120
Exactly half of the Celtics field goal attempts were three-point attempts last night. Boston took 92 shots, and 46 of them were threes. Guess what. It worked! No surprise there when you hit almost 40% of those threes, especially when the team you’re playing against only shot 41% overall on their field goals and only 26% from 3.
The 3-ball might not be there every night for the Celtics, and they can score without it, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Jaylen Brown scored 32 points last night for Boston and was 4-6 from 3. Derrick White hit 7 three-pointers on 12 attempts and scored 25.
For the Cavs, Donovan Mitchell was about the only one who scored as he finished with 33 points.
The Celtics lead this series 1-0, and game 2 will remain in Boston.
Dallas Mavericks 95 | Oklahoma City Thunder 117
The Oklahoma City Thunder were able to get a big game 1 win on their home court in the 2nd round of playoffs.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists for OKC. He was 11 of 13 from the free throw line and was in control of the game for most of the night.
It was the other star on the court who wasn’t in control. Luka Doncic was on the court but maybe wasn’t all there for the Mavs. He had a terrible shooting night where he went 6-18, and although he still managed to score 19 points and have 6 rebounds and 9 assists, he also had 5 turnovers. This just wasn’t the Luka/Mavs performance we expected.
Overall, the Mavs shot 39%, and while the Thunder weren’t much better at 45% overall, at the least, the Thunder were 46% from 3-point land.
Expect the Mavs to play better in game 2. It should be a good one.
Other Headlines
🏀 Jamal Murray will avoid a suspension after throwing a towel and heat pack on the court during the Nugget’s game 2 loss to the Timberwolves on Monday night. He was fined $100k but will be available in the lineup for game 3 tomorrow.
🏈Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is being investigated for allegedly hitting a photographer at a nightclub in Dallas on Monday. The 24-year-old is also facing potential NFL punishment after being arrested on eight felony charges following a multi-car crash in Dallas in late March. Rice looked like one of the Chiefs' most promising rising stars at WR last season. Hopefully, he can sort out his troubles.
🏒 The San Jose Sharks were the worst team in the NHL this year, and they just won the NHL’s draft pick lottery for the #1 pick. The consensus is they’ll pick 17-year-old Canadian phenom Macklin Celebrini, who played for Boston University this year. Celebrini was the youngest player ever to win the Hobey Baker Award, aka college hockey’s Heisman trophy.
🏀 The NBA awards are almost all in. We’re waiting for the MVP to be announced today after all the other award recipients were named. We’ll drop the awards tomorrow.
Call your shots
The Milwaukee Brewers were down by 2 runs against the Kansas City Royals in the 9th inning yesterday. Royals fans were chirping Willy Adames all game, and he was having some fun with it. He was chatting back and forth with the opposing fans sitting behind his dugotu. While standing in the on-deck circle with 2 runners on in the 9th, one of the Royals’ fans told Adames to hit a homer, and he replied, “I got you.”
Wouldn’t you know it? Adames hit the go-ahead homer, and the Brewers won the game.
Willy Adames called his shot and he certainly delivered! He spoke with @SophiaMinnaert after his CLUTCH go-ahead homer in the 6-5 win over the Royals.
