A quick check in
Howdy!
We hope you all had a great 4th of July and are enjoying summer. We’re still taking a little break while the major sports are off but we’re here to do a little check in on what you might’ve missed the last week.
Let’s see what happened over the last week and what you can look out for this week.
Basketball
🏀 Dan Hurley got his 💰️after signing a 6-year deal with UConn that will pay him $50 million. Hurley had just signed a 6 year extension worth $32 mil after UConn won the natty in 2023. I think we’d all agree the extra $18 mil is worth the back-to-back championships.
🏀 Speaking of UConn….. Cooper Flagg considered UConn his college destination but the #1 recruit ultimately chose Duke. Anyways, he scrimmaged against Team USA as the prep for the Olympics, and Flagg impressed quite a few NBA guys. Flagg was the first college player in over a decade to be invited to the select team, which typically comprises young NBA players brought in to scrimmage Team USA ahead of the Olympics and World Cups. Flagg apparently hit some threes and had some tough putbacks on top NBA players, and he hasn’t even played a college game yet.
🏀 We had a bunch of swaps and signings during the last week. DeMar DeRozan was traded to the Kings, the Spurs got Harrison Barnes in a 2031 pick swap, and the Bulls received Chris Duarte, two picks, and some cash. The Hornets resigned Miles Bridges to a 3-year, $75 million deal. Klay Thompson is all done with the Golden State Warriors, as they couldn’t reach a deal, and he is now a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
🏀We’re about three weeks away from Team USA’s first Olympic game against Serbia, and we’re not sure if we even have a roster. Kevin Durant has a calf sprain and has been sitting. Joel Embiid and Kawhi Leonard are dealing with knee injuries(no duh, they could hardly finish the regular season), and Jayson Tatum is taking excused absences(at least Steve Kerr handles it better than Robert Saleh). These boys better not come home from Paris without gold medals.
Soccer
⚽️ The USMNT had a rough exit from the Copa America group stage. While the US wasn’t expected to win the entire tournament, it was expected that they would make it out of the group stage. We’re not going to try to break down their failures; we’re just here to mention that head coach Gregg Berhalter might be fired before the end of the week!
⚽️ If you were looking to get into the International Soccer scene, the US showing may not have enticed you to tune in again. But here’s the deal: The Euro Championship is happening right now, and you should definitely tune in for some world-class football. Spain vs. France in the semis today at 3 p.m. ET on FOX and England vs. Netherlands tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET on FOX. This is the stuff worth watching.
Golf
⛳️We can all move on from the 2023 Ryder Cup and the terrible job that Zach Johnson did. We’ve got a new leader for the USA Team…. KEEGAN BRADLEY. Keegan got the gig after Tiger turned it down because Tiger couldn’t fully commit to the ask. Keegan seems pretty pumped, and he’s way less of a weirdo than Johnson, so let’s hope he turns this around when the Ryder Cup comes to Long Island in 2025.
⛳️We had some midwest US golf take place last week at TPC Deere Run in Illinois. It’s a week where you don’t see maybe the top 20 golfers in the world participate, but these guys are still the best of the best. They sure showed that's the truth with a little rain and some soft conditions. Davis Thompson won his first PGA Tour event with a record-setting -28 for the tournament. Do you know how crazy that is for four rounds of golf? Thompson had five top-10 finishes before this win.
⛳️The rain might make for easy golf in the US, but that won’t necessarily be the case the next few weeks on the Tour. This week, Scotland is hosting the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, just outside Edinborough. It will be a rainy week on the Scottish Coast, but with the rain comes the wind. It will be rainy with temps in the 50s, and the wind will be in the high teens. This is a great tournament to get used to the links-style courses before players tee it up at the year's final major when “The Open” travels to Royal Troon the next week.
That should just about fill you in for another week or so. I guess the only thing you may need to know is that Wimbledon is happening right now. We’re in the quarterfinal stage, and if you click here, you can find out any info you want.
Keep enjoying summer, and we’ll be back sometime next week!
Cheers
