Am I Right Already?
Or Just Not Wrong Yet?
Happy Friday! Hope ya’ll just got paid and set a little aside for some weekend gambling. I also hope you threw down a few quid on last night’s TNF action because that was easy money.
Let’s jump right into the sports world so you can get through the last day of summer and get out of the office early.
Thursday Night Football
New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers
I’m not sure if I’m right about the Giants or maybe not enough time has gone by for me to be wrong but I’m pretty sure I called it during the middle of the season last year, at the end of the season last year, and the beginning of the season this year. THE NEW YORK GIANTS STINK!
The Giants lost to the 49ers 30-12 which also means if you took my picks yesterday you would’ve hit ATS and on the under. The Giants did score 9 more points than I anticipated though.
So what happened? I keep looking at the stat lines thinking they can’t be true. It felt like the refs were helping the 49ers all night and throwing flags against the G-Men. Both teams had the same amount of penalties but SF had 44 more penalty yards. I thought the Giants had a much better-rushing attack than the stats showed, but they actually only had 29 rushing yards.
What really happened was the Giants played a very good 49ers defense and the offense couldn’t stay on the field. The offense had 10 first downs compared to SF’s 26. The Giants converted on 25% of their 3rd downs, the 49ers were over 50%. The Giants had a total of 150 yards of offense. SF had 441! You just can’t win games like that.
Here are a few quick stat lines for SF. Purdy went 25-37, throwing for 310 yards and 2 TDs. Christian McCaffrey rushed 18 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Debo Samuel had 6 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown (that’s efficient).
Here’s another interesting statistic. The Giants blitzed Purdy on 85% of passing plays and Purdy had a 66% completion percentage against the blitz, 247 yards and 2 TDs.
Both teams get a few extra days of rest and the 49ers take on the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday and the Giants will host the Seattle Seahawks for Monday Night Football.
Check out highlights here if you don’t feel like checking your work email.
A Major Setback For The Cowboys’ Defense
Dallas Cowboys star CB Trevon Diggs is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in practice on Thursday. Diggs suffered the injury in what I think is the worst drill for DBs, one-on-ones. Since Diggs entered the NFL in 2020 he’s tied for the most INTs with 18. This season, he’s only allowed 31 yards on 3 catches and has forced fumble and an INT through 2 games. DaRon Bland will fill in for Diggs fulltime at CB. Bland led the Cowboys with 5 INTs last year and as long the defense continues to pressure quarterbacks the way they do, the secondary should be fine.
PGA Tour Set To Open In Maui In January
The PGA Tour will open its 2024 season in Maui with the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, following wildfires that devastated Lahaina and resulted in 97 casualties. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan aims for the tournament to inspire and support Maui and Lahaina communities. The event will take place from Jan. 4-7, 2024.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green endorsed the tournament, encouraging its planning and volunteer registration. While Lahaina suffered extensive damage, Kapalua Resort's property remains unaffected. Parts of Maui are set to reopen to visitors on Oct. 8, with 11,000 hotel rooms available, half of Maui's total. Kapalua's Bay Course has already reopened, and the Plantation Course will follow on Oct. 18.
While it may seem too early to host a big tournament, the PGA Tour has always been a great source of fundraising and support for Maui. Last year, the tournament raised $694,705 for local charities, contributing to a total of over $8.5 million since the PGA Tour started its season kickoff there in 1999.
The Saudis Are Sportswashing And The Give Zero F**KS
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, stated in an interview that he is unconcerned about accusations of "sportswashing" against his country. He emphasized that if this practice boosts the GDP even by just 1 percent, he will continue it, without regard for criticism. The Saudis have a Public Investment Fund that has been actively engaging in global sports, including the creation of LIV Golf, which led to a partnership with the PGA Tour.
Critics argue that such investments serve to improve Saudi Arabia's global image, a claim bin Salman rejects, emphasizing the economic benefits. This summer, the Saudi Pro League invested nearly $1 billion in acquiring European-based soccer stars, including Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo.
