Rory McIlroy Needs a GoFundMe?
Today Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes and 57 seconds
Good Morning. This is the Daily Breakroom and we’re here to help you get your Sunday started. You can take care of the meal prepping and planning for the week and we’ll take care of the sports.
Here’s what we got today:
⛳️ Sundays on the PGA Tour
🏌️ Rory losing $3mil
🏀 NBA Scoreboard and Sunday Matchups
Here we go.
Sundays on the PGA Tour
The leaderboard is looking different than usual at the RBC Heritage. We talked about this being a designated event earlier in the week. The designated or elevated event, as some are calling it means the top players on tour are required to play but it also means the purse is $20million, far more than it ever was for a tournament like this.
We’ve got some exciting matchups heading into Sunday. Matthew Fitzpatrick leads the way at 14 under and is being trailed by Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, and even Tommy Fleetwood. Can Fitzpatrick hold off a Sunday push? Will Scheffler get another win this year or might Tommy Fleetwood get his first ever PGA Tour win? Tune in to the GOLF Channel from 1-3pm and then CBS from 3-6pm to find out.
Rory Losing $3 million
The leaderboard at the RBC Heritage is without 1 golfer that we didn’t expect to be absent. Rory McIlroy skipped the tournament this weekend and will be docked $3 million from his Player Impact Program earnings because of his absence.
If you didn’t know, the designated/elevated events were the PGA’s way of combatting some of the LIV Golf hype and ensuring more tournament were exciting, especially coming off of a Major week with the Masters. The top 20 players are suppose to participate in 17 tournaments and can miss 1 event, if needed. Rory skipped this tournament after missing the cut at the Masters and this was his 2nd miss. He’ll be penalized and $3 mil will be taken out his of PIP earning potential.
It’s not like Rory has to write a check for the money, but it does mean his pay at the end for the PIP will be less.
How much money are we talking exactly with this PIP? Rory was 2nd in the PIP last year behind Tiger and got paid $12 million. He also made $26.7 million with player earnings for the 2021-2022 season. The $3 mil will likely be of little concern.
The bigger story here is Rory missing the events when he was the face of the PGA Tour and helped make the changes to get these elevated events. Some of the golfers don’t seem pleased and others don’t seem to care. He’s struggling with some play and it seems more useful to hit the reset button and try to figure some things out. Hopefully better play comes out of this for Rory.
