Say it 5 times fast: Buzzer Beater In Baton Rouge

Seriously, Do It!

We made it to Thursday of this week, so you know what that means. The PGA Tour is teeing it up today, and the NBA is making its return from the All-Star break.

We’ve got news from basically every sport, so let’s grab a coffee and pay attention!

Buzzer Beater In Baton Rouge

Try saying that five times fast…Seriously, Do It.

LSU upset #17 Kentucky last night, and while upsetting a team on your home court isn’t as cool as Starsky & Hutch or upsetting a team on the road, it’s still gotta feel good beating an SEC team that is full of talent.

Kentucky’s Antonio Reeves went off last night, scoring 25 points, and was 60% from 3. UK had a 9-point lead heading into halftime, and LSU metaphorically stormed the court in the 2nd half.

Here’s what happened. LSU came out in the 2nd half, and their deficit grew to 13 in the first few minutes, and then the Tigers flipped a switch. LSU went on a 17-4 scoring run over a 5-minute period to tie up the game. LSU started to pull away for 5 minutes, then lead changes ensued with 8 minutes left to play. It was a battle to the end and it looked like Kentucky might have the last possession for a chance to win.

I would explain this game ended, but you should just watch what went down.

Other NCAA Stats and Scores

🏀 #7 Marquette recovered from their loss to UConn and demolished DePaul 105-71. While the point spread is impressive, DePaul is 3-23 this year, so take that as you may. Tyler Kolek went off last night, but he only scored 3 points. Kolek had 18 assists, which helped five other players get into double digits in scoring, including Kam Jones, who scored 34.

🏀 Penn State upset #12 Illinois 90-89 last night in a game that came down to Penn State hitting three free throws for the win on the dreaded 3-pointer foul at the end of a game. What’s more impressive is that Penn State was down 10 points with 2:30 left in the game. ✅ Comeback complete.

🏀 Things are heating up all over the SEC. Florida and Alabama went to OT in Tuscaloosa and Alabama came out on top with a big play at the end. Bama was able to grab an offensive rebound on a 3-point attempt and get a quick layup with about 10 seconds to go. Florida couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds. Walter Clayton Jr. had 27 points for the Gators, and Bama’s Grant Nelson led the team with 22.

Fastest To 50

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews just broke a record older than him. The 26-year-old skater scored his 50th and 51st goal of the season last night in a 6-3 win over the Arizona Coyotes. Matthews became the fastest player to score 51 goals in 54 games in 28 years. Here’s a cool little twist to the story, too. Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was able to complete this feat just a few miles away from where he grew up as the Maple Leafs were on the road playing in the Phoenix area.

Other NHL Scores

🏒 The Bruins battled it out in Edmonton to get a much-needed OT win. The Bruins are back on a 2 game win streak after dropping four games in a row. Boston will face Calgary tonight, playing back-to-back games in Canada.

🏒 It was a wild ride in Anaheim last night. The Columbus Blue Jackets came to town and had a 4 goal lead just three minutes into the 2nd period. The Ducks wouldn’t swim away, though. They would pour four straight goals in the net before the 2nd period ended. The Blue Jackets were unphased and scored three 3rd period goals to win 7-4

🚨 Ex-Barcellona player Dani Alves has been sentenced to 4.5 years of prison as he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022. The guilty verdict comes after Alves was arrested in January 2023 after he was partying at a nightclub in Barcelona on NYE. We don’t need to get into all the details, but basically, the story is that Alves sexually assaulted a female in a bathroom and then lied about the sexual contact because he was trying to protect his relationship with his wife. More on the story here.

⚽️ Another Ex-Barcelona player, Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami get a win in their MLS opener last night. Miami beat Real Salt Lake 2-0 thanks to 2 assists from Messi.

We can’t even go a full day with the new 12-team college football playoff without having the idea of a 14-team college football playoff shoved in our faces.

This a real thing, though, and it’s possible that in 2026, we could have two more teams added to the playoff.

If the CFP can add an extra two teams, that means more playoff games, which means more games that actually matter, which means more money coming in from TV deals.

Man, I’d like to be the banker for the SEC or Big 10!

We’ll keep you updated on any news we hear.

PGA Tour: Mexico Championship

The PGA Tour is finishing up the West Coast stint with another tournament on the Pacific. This time, golfers are teeing it up in Mexico. This week's action will take place in Vallarta, Mexico, at Vidanta Vallarta. It’s a par 71 course that stretches over 7,200 yards.

Who’s playing the tournament this week? You should know some golfers out there like Tony Finau (defended champ), Charley Hoffman, Nicolai Hojgaard, and Emiliano Grillo. It’s not a star-studded field today, but the total purse is still $8.1 million, and the golf should be top-notch.

Tune into the Golf Channel at 4 pm ET today to catch the action or stream it on ESPN+ all day.
