Second Round Sunday

GM. This is the Daily Breakroom. We’re here to talk sports and get you on your Sunday way, in less than 5 minutes.

Here’s what we’re covering today:

  • NCAA Tournament Saturday Games

  • NCAA Tournament Sunday Games

  • Sunday at Valspar Championship

Here we go.

NCAA Tournament Saturday Games

Saturday had the ingredients for more big upsets. While there weren’t as many shocking results as possibilities existed, we still have ourselves a Cinderella story.

Missouri vs Princeton

The 15 seeded Princeton Tigers upset the 2 seeded Arizona Wildcats in the first round of the tournament. Princeton was then matched up to the 7 seeded Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Princeton defeated Mizzou 78-63 in a complete man handling.

Here’s the thing, Princeton had one impressive thing on the stats book that Mizzou didn’t. It wasn’t 3 pointers(although they did technically hit more), the free throws weren’t questionably out of balance, turnovers weren’t even that much in Princeton’s favor. It all came down to 2nd chances, more specifically, 2nd chances on rebounds. Princeton out-rebounded Mizzou 44-30. More importantly, Princeton had 16 offensive rebounds and Mizzou only had 8. Those 2nd chances for Princeton kept turning into 3 point attempts that eventually started to drop.

Princeton is the Cinderella story heading to the Sweet 16. They’ll either take on 3-seeded Baylor or 6 seeded Creighton. If you’ve beaten a 2 seed and a 7 seed, nothing seems impossible.

Kansas vs Arkansas

The 1 seeded and defending National Champs Kansas Jayhawks took on the 8 seeded Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks overcame a 12 point deficit with about 11 minutes left to win 72-71. The game came down to the last two minutes with the Razorbacks battling it out under the basket to get offensive rebounds and putbacks. Many fans were unhappy with calls at the end of the game but hey, you just can’t give up a 12 point lead in March and then complain about it.

Arkansas will face the winner of today’s UConn vs. Saint Mary’s game.

Other Scores

Let’s run through the other games quickly.

🏀 Furman couldn’t keep their magic going as they lost to San Diego State 75-52.

🏀 Tennessee defeated Duke 65-52 in a well matched up game.

🏀 It was looking like another upset was brewing when Auburn was leading Houston at half 41-30. Houston crushed Auburn in the second half outscoring them by 27 to get the W, 81-64

🏀 Texas outlasted Penn State to win 71-66

🏀 UCLA had to hold of a second half rush from Northwestern to win 68-63

🏀 Alabama handled their business vs Maryland to win 73-51

NCAA Tournament Sunday Games

Cancel your Sunday plans, order some takeout, and grab a seat on the couch. We’ve got 11 hours of basketball to watch.

Sunday’s games include some more closely seeded matchups so you really can’t go wrong when choosing what to put on the TV.

Here’s the big question. Can 16 seeded Farleigh Dickinson defeat 9 seeded Florida Atlantic to continue on to the Sweet 16? If FDU wins they’ll be the first ever 16 seed to make it to the Sweet 16. For not having the height, FDU sure covers the court unlike any team I’ve ever seen. We’ll see if these boys come flying around like they did against Purdue. You can watch the game on truTV at 7:45pm.

Here’s a lineup of the other games.

🏀 3 Xavier vs 11 Pittsburgh @ 12:10 on CBS

🏀 3 Kansas St vs 6 Kentucky @ 2:40pm on CBS

🏀 2 Marquette vs 7 Michigan St @ 5:15 on CBS

🏀 4 UConn vs 5 Saint Mary’s @ 6:10pm on TNT

🏀 3 Baylor vs 6 Creighton @ 7:10pm on TBS

🏀 4 Indiana vs 5 Miami @ 8:40pm on TNT

🏀 3 Gonzaga vs 6 TCU @ 9:40pm on TBS

Sundays on the PGA Tour

Our normal Sundays with Scottie will have to take a break as Scheffler took a week off and didn’t play in the Valspar Championship after winning The Players Championship last week. That’s okay as we can still have…

Sundays with Spieth.

Jordan Spieth is sitting tied for 2nd at -7 along with Tommy Fleetwood. Adam Schenk heads the leaderboard at -8. Schenk and Spieth will tee off 1:40pm as Spieth is looking for his first win this season and Schenk is looking for his first win on the PGA Tour since turning pro many years ago. Fleetwood has also yet to win a PGA Tour event in his still very successful career, so he’s someone to look out for as he tees off at 1:30pm.

If you’re looking for a break from basketball, tune into the GOLF Channel from 1-3pm and NBC from 3-6pm to check out the Sunday action

Have a great day of watching and remember……

Don’t let Mondays ruin your Sundays!

Cheers
