Starry Night In Dallas
Today's Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes and 5 seconds
Good Morning and welcome to the Daily Breakroom. We’re like Chipotle, butt for sports. We get you in and out pretty quickly and you’ll see us again tomorrow morning.
Here’s what we got today:
🏀 NBA Today
🏒 Game 7 Winner
⚽️ UEFA Semi-Finals Leg 2
🏈 A Soft Retirement
🏈 No. 1 Prospect Commits Again
Here we go.
NBA Conference Finals
We have max 21 games left for the NBA this year before a champion is crowned and unlike some of the players, we don’t need a day off. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a choice… so we were all forced to take a “load management” day yesterday.
The Lakers and Nuggets also got a few days of rest and now it’s Western Conference Finals time. We’ve got the Los Angeles Lakers at the Denver Nuggets tonight, tipping off at 8:30 pm ET on ESPN.
Here are the two questions we have going into the series.
Will the Lakers be able to stop Nikola Jokic?
He’s averaging 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham joked that the only way to stop him is to “catch him coming out of his house and kidnap him.”
Can the Lakers steal a road win like they did in the first two series?
The Lakers are a very different team than they were at the last matchup between these two squads, adding 4 new players before the trade deadline. Still, for the Lakers to have a chance against this well-developed Nuggets team, they’re going to need to be heading back to LA 1-1.
Tune in if you can, this should be a heck of a series.
Stanley Cup Finals
It was quite the run for the Seattle Kraken who are in their second season as an NHL team. The Kraken made the playoffs for the first time as a franchise, winning their first series against the Colorado Avalanche and advancing to a game 7 against the Dallas Stars. All good things must come to an end, at least that’s what we’ve heard.
The Dallas Stars defeated the Kraken 2-1 last night in game 7 of the 2nd round. After a scoreless first period for either team, Roope Hintz scored an unassisted goal with 4 minutes left in the 2nd period and this was his 9th goal of the playoffs. Dallas scored again midway through the 3rd when 20-year-old Wyatt Johnston put a slick backhander into the net to have the eventual go-ahead goal.
Seattle battled it out until the end in an attempt to extend the game into OT. The Kraken pulled their goalie at the 3-minute mark but the extra skater couldn’t provide enough help by the end. Seattle scored off a faceoff with 18 seconds to go in the 3rd and had a final opportunity at another goal with 5 seconds left but couldn’t capitalize.
Dallas moves on to the Western Conference Finals where they will face the Vegas Golden Knights in a repeat matchup of the 2020 Western Conference Finals.
Check out the Johnston goal.
UEFA Leg 2
We have leg 2 of the UEFA Championship starting today.
Inter Milan will face AC Milan at 3:00 pm ET today and Manchester City will take on Real Madrid tomorrow at 3:00 pm ET. You can watch both games on CBS.
A Soft Retirement
Matt Ryan is testing the retirement waters and is joining CBS Sports as an NFL Analyst. The MVP-winning QB has played 15 years in the NFL and will bring (excuse the buzzwords) a fresh perspective to CBS Sports, per the CBS Sports press statement.
Matt Ryan has made this clear that this is not a retirement announcement. It sounds like he’ll see how this goes for a few weeks and if there is a major injury and he’s no good at being on television in a suit, he’ll throw a jersey back on.
We should probably mention that the Colts owe Ryan $12 mil this year too. So whether he’s in a studio or on the gridiron, the man is getting paid.
The Georgia Bulldogs Can’t Catch A Break
The Bulldogs just have it so hard with all of their recent success. Back-to-back National Champs, amazing facilities, the best coaches in the business, a community that revolves around football, and a winning culture to top it all off. That’s a hard way to live. Think about the hype and expectations they have to live up to every year.
Is 3 in a row enough? 4 in a row? Who knows what will be considered good enough in Athens in a few years!
Well, the #1 prospect in the 2024 recruiting class is on board to find out. Dylan Raiola, a QB from Phoenix has declared himself A DAWG. He committed to Georgia over USC and Nebraska after he decommited from Ohio State in December of 2022.
That’s all for today. Thanks for reading.
