Summer Scaries Begin
+ A Comeback Story
Good Morning from the Daily Breakroom. You know we like our Saturday editions like our stack of pancakes…. short and sweet!
Here’s what is on the agenda today:
NBA Summer League + Early Injuries
Big Win in the MLB
Murray Falls at Wimbledon
A Comeback Story
Let’s go.
NBA Summer League
The excitement around the NBA summer league is growing as fans were lining up outside the venue in Las Vegas in advance to watch the matchup between the No. 1 pick in the draft Victor Wembanyama and the No. 2 pick Brandon Miller
This was Wemby’s first summer league game appearance and he doesn’t appear to be NBA-ready at this moment and he’ll readily admit that. Wemby struggled from the field as he only scored 9 points, but hit only 2 of his 13 field goal attempts from the field. He did display some handles from the perimeters and he grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists. Wemby also had 5 blocks so at least he’s got some defensive presence already.
Early Injuries
Two of the top picks from this year’s draft were injured in summer league games last night.
Scoot Henderson, the No. 3 pick for the Portland Trailblazers would leave a game last night with a shoulder injury and is undergoing an MRI. The good news is the team doesn’t think it was a dislocation, which would be a major setback.
The Houston Rockets rookie Amen Thompson had to leave his game last night after spraining his ankle. It doesn’t appear to be serious but he’ll likely sit out the rest of summer league now.
A Major League Milestone
The Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Yankees last night for the Cubs’ first-ever win in the Bronx.
The Yankees’ loss was handed to them by their former pitcher Jameson Taillon who allowed only one hit over eight innings and outpitched Carlos Rodon.
This is the Yanks’ 3rd straight loss and the two teams will match up against each other today and tomorrow.
Murray Falls at Wimbledon
Andy Murray had a lead at Wimbledon on Thursday before having to shut it down against the No. 5 ranked player in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas. The match hit the curfew and the two would need to play the remainder of the match on Friday.
Murray would fall short of his upset by narrowly losing Friday's second-round encounter 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (3), 4-6.
A Comeback Story
Sha’Carri Richardson has won the U.S. Women’s 100m title 2 years after a doping violation for the use of marijuana. Her time was 10.82 seconds.
You might remember that Richardson tested positive for “the weed” after the 2021 Olympic Trials and it caused quite an uproar as its use was becoming much more mainstream in the US.
Richardson, who is only 23, will represent the USA next month at the world championships. She said she’s not fully back, but she’s better.
Let’s see if she can grab a top spot on the podium in August.
