Sunday Insanity
Happy Monday and welcome to the Daily Breakroom. We hope you enjoyed your weekend and that you caught some of the awesome action coming out of the television. Before we get to all the sports, we need to cover one thing.
Insanity
First, we should define insanity. We’re not going to use the Webster's Dictionary definition. No, we’ll get the definition from our buddy Albert Einstein.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. -Albert Einstein.
If you haven’t heard yet, Ja Morant ain’t no Einstein.
Morant was suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies in March for flashing a gun in a Denver strip club while on Instagram Live. He returned to the team later that month.
After the Grizzlies were bounced out of the playoffs by the Lakers, Morant was back on IG live this weekend and was seen flashing a gun…. AGAIN. The team has suspended him from all activities and now the NBA is also looking into the situation.
Now that is just some insane behavior.
That’s enough time spent on that, let’s get to the action before we go insane.
Celtics Advance
We’ll say the Boston Celtics but it was really Jayson Tatum who advanced the team to the Eastern Conference Finals with a dominating 112-88 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in game 7. Tatum finished with 51 points and Jaylen Brown had 25 for the Celts. We mentioned when the Celts were down 3-2 that Tatum and Brown would need all-star performances to win the series and that is exactly what they brought to the court.
Boston will face the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals with game 1 happening on Wednesday at 8:30 pm ET on TNT.
Western Conference Finals
We’ll remind you again tomorrow but the Western Conference Finals begin Tuesday night at 8:30 pm ET on ESPN. We’ll have the Los Angeles Lakers facing off against the Denver Nuggets.
Stanley Cup Playoffs
When it comes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it’s not enough to have Connor McDavid aka the best player in the world, on your team.
While McDavid and Warren Foegele scored two goals in the 1st period to give the Edmonton Oilers the 2-1 edge over the Vegas Golden Knight, it wasn’t enough to hold off a dominant 2nd period from Vegas.
Vegas got a hat-trick from Jonathan Marchessault in the 2nd period to take the lead to 4-2 and would pop another empty netter in to win the series and advance to the Western Conference Finals.
Tonight’s Game 7 Matchup
Seattle Kraken at Dallas Stars, 8:00 pm ET on ESPN
Thank The Golf Gods
Balls in baskets, pucks in net, and golf balls in cups make for a great weekend. We got the excitement from basketball and hockey, but what about golf?
LIV Golf
Dustin Johnson won the LIV Golf tournament at Cedar Ridge in Tulsa, overcoming a triple bogey by making a crucial birdie on the 18th hole. Johnson, who closed with a 3-under 67, joined a playoff with British Open champion Cameron Smith and Branden Grace. In the playoff, Johnson sank a 15-foot putt for a birdie while Smith missed his 12-foot putt, securing Johnson's win. This victory marks Johnson's second win since joining LIV Golf a year ago and his first win this season.
AT&T Byron Nelson on the PGA Tour
Jason Day marked his first PGA TOUR victory in five years with an impressive 9 under on Sunday. His 62 was enough to secure a one-shot victory over Austin Eckroat and Si Woo Kim. Day took the outright lead with a chip-in for birdie on the par-4 12th hole, breaking the tie with hometown favorite Scottie Scheffler. This win comes after a winless streak since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Day finished the week -23 and this victory holds special significance as it fell on Mother's Day, just over a year after Day's mother passed away from cancer.
PGA Championship
The wins for both Dustin Johnson and Jason Day are very timely as the PGA Championship is taking place this week at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY. Golfers will take any momentum they can get heading into a major as it helps them exude confidence during a week when all the competitors are bringing their best game. We’ll talk more about the PGA Championship later in the week but similar to the Masters at Augusta, we’ll have a mix of the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf Tour.
There are 13 ways to grab a spot in the 156-player field. Here’s who is eligible.
All former winners of the PGA Championship
Winners of the last five Masters (2019-23)
Winners of the last five U.S. Opens (2018-22)
Winners of the last five Open Championships (2017-22)
Winners of the last three Players Championships (2021-23)
The top three on the OWGR’s International Federation Ranking List as of April 24, 2023
Winner of the 2022 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship
The top 15 finishers and ties from the 2022 PGA Championship
The top 20 finishers from the 2023 PGA Professional Championship
The top 70 players who are eligible and have earned the most PGA Championship points from the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson through the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship (ending May 7, 2023)
Playing members of the last named U.S. and European Ryder Cup teams (2021), provided they remain in the top 100 on the Official World Golf Rankings as of May 7, 2023
Winners of PGA Tour co-sponsored or approved tournaments whose victories are considered official, from the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge through the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson
If necessary to complete the 156-person field, those players beyond the top 70 players who are eligible and who have earned the most PGA Championship points from the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson through the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship (ending May 7, 2023) in order of their position on such a list
So…. Dustin Johnson is eligible. Are other LIV golfers? Yes, if they meet the above criteria.
Whether you’re an amateur, a PGA Tour pro, or a LIV pro, you better bring your best stuff this week. This Donald Ross designed course will host fast greens with subtle undulations but that won’t be the difficult part. The challenges will come from the narrow fairways and the deep rough but the ultimate test will be the final 3 holes that are par 4’s. Holes 16, 17, and 18 measure 458, 502, and 497 yards.
Seriously though, check out this rough.
Folks, we have our first sighting of Oak Hill’s PGA Championship-ready rough, and boy is it juicy.
