The Terrible Towel Just Got Extra Terrible!
Good Morning!
Listen here. I don’t usually have a lot of nice things to say about Russell Wilson. I think he’s egotistical, boring, average, and, dare I even say, a fraudulent QB. Nobody wants him to cook, nobody needs him to ride, we just need him to answer a few interview questions without clichés and prepared answers that he worked with a PR team to develop.
But I’d like to start the week off by personally thanking Russ. I’d like to thank him for making the decision to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers for $1.2 million yesterday instead of ruining selection Sunday, which is only 6 days away.
We’ll talk a little more about that, plus a few other NFL signings, and then we'll cover some NBA and NHL news. You want golf, too? We’ll squeeze that in, also. All under 5 minutes!
Here we go.
NFL Free Agency
🏈 So Russ signed with the Steelers for a 1-year deal. It’s a helluva deal for Pittsburgh as the Broncos still need to pay Russ $38 million this year, so you might as well experiment with Russ. He’ll still need to compete with Kenny Pickett for a starting spot, but something tells me every Pittsburgh fan thinks they’re now Super Bowl favorites. LOL. Let’s see how long you’ll be swinging that terrible towel when you’re still losing with Russ.
🏈 Baker’s bet has paid off. The former #1 draft pick, Baker Mayfield, bet on himself when he went to Tampa last year. He took a one-year, $4 million deal and helped Tampa win the division (well, really, it was hard to lose it) and led the Bucs to a wild-card playoff win. The Bucs just rewarded Baker with a three-year, $100 million contract that includes $50 million guaranteed.
🏈 Speaking of QBs in Florida, the Patriots are working on a deal that will send Mac Jones to Jacksonville for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick.
⏰ All of these deals aren’t completely official yet. Free agency opens its doors at Noon today. Teams can begin negotiating contracts, but deals won’t become official until Wednesday at 4 pm, which is when the 2024 football year officially opens.
Women’s Basketball Battles
🏀 We had a chippy SEC Championship last night where #1 South Carolina beat #8 LSU. The final score was 79-72, but that’s not the news we’re here for. A little scuffle towards the end of this game resulted in 6 ejections. It was bound to happen as it was a physical game, there was pushing, smack talk hair being pulled on box outs and even some big hits.
🏀 #3 Iowa escaped Nebraska in overtime in the Big 10 championship game. Iowa was down at the half 46-35, and Caitlin Clark only had 4 points. Clark caught fire in the 2nd half and finished with 34 points, and Iowa won 94-89.
🏀 #5 USC upset #2 Stanford in the Pac-12 championship 74-61. This will be USC’s last Pac-12 championship and their first one since 2014. See ya later, Pac-12!
NBA Rundown
🏀 The Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves played a wild game on Sunday night. The O/U points total was 229.5 last night, and the teams scored 137 points at the end of the half. That’s easy money, right? WRONG. Only 92 points were scored in the 2nd half, and the Lakers walked away with a 120-109 win, with a total of 229 points! DAMN. LeBron finished with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists, and Anthony Davis had 27 points and 25 rebounds!
🏀 The Clippers lost to the Milwaukee Bucks yesterday 124-117. Milwaukee made sure they wouldn't lose to both LA teams in a weekend after losing to the Lakers on Friday. Last night, Giannis finished with 34 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists, and Damian Lillard had 35 points, 7 rebounds, and 11 assists. To be fair, the Clippers did not have Paul George or Kawhi Leonard on the court yesterday.
🏀 The Knicks and 76ers put up a disappointing effort last but at least Philly fans can walk away with a win. This game had the lowest combined points in a game since November of 2016. They fell 72.5 points short of the points total. The good news is that these teams play again tomorrow in Philly, so maybe take the total, no matter the number?
NHL News
🏒 It was a tough weekend for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they were outscored by a total of 8 goals in two days. The Penguins fell to the Bruins on Saturday 5-1 and then took another tough loss on Sunday to the Edmonton Oilers 4-0. Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists, but Calvin Pickard was a dude in goal and made 41 saves.
🏒 The Blackhawks got a home win yesterday, beating Arizona 7-4. Connor Bedard had a 3-point night where he scored 2 goals and had 1 assist.
Scheffler Wins The Arnie Invitational Again.
We talked about Bay Hill yesterday and mentioned it could be anyone’s day on this challenging course that shows no mercy. Well Scottie Scheffler showed Bay Hill no mercy himself. Scheffler had the lead heading into Sunday and played a bogey-free round of golf, and finished six under on the day. It was yesterday’s best score by two shots and it was the first 5-shot victory at Bay Hill since Tiger Woods did it in 2012. This is Scheffler’s 2nd time in 3 years winning at Bay Hill, thanks to a great day of work by his putter, which actually gained him strokes for the first time in a while.
