It's about that time

Happy Monday Everyone!

It’s getting to that time of the year… football time!

Believe it or not, the NFL season is creeping up, and College Football's first game is less than a week away: Florida State and Georgia Tech kick off at Noon on Saturday.

August brings us more than just football. Let’s put aside the NFL talk until the end and take a look at what else is going on.

August Spooooooorts

🎾 We’re exactly one week away from the final tennis grand slam of the year when the top pros head to New York City for the US Open. It’s a grueling 3-week tournament where players deal with the NYC heat and humidity. Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff will be returning to defend their titles. We’ll have more on this next week, but if you turn the TV on you really can’t miss it

⛳️ There was some chaos for one golfer returning to the US after the Olympics. And it was Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama, the last golfer you’d expect to ever have problems. Here’s what happened

👉️ Matsuyama’s caddie and coach were robbed in London after they made a stop there post-Olympics. They were having lunch at a restaurant, and their belongings were stolen, including their passports. Hideki was able to get back to the States to compete in the first round of the PGA Tour’s playoffs, but he’d be teamless as the other two guys had to go back to Japan. Matsuyama had to get a fill-in caddie, and after having a bogey-free three rounds and a five-shot lead on the final day, the wheels started to fall off. After a birdie on 11, Matsuyama followed up the best way all of us amateur golfers know-how. Bogey, par, bogey, double bogey. +4 on the next 4 holes. It looked like Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland were about to have a playoff, but then Matsuyama went par, birdie, birdie to finish and win. Matsuyama won $3.6 million and moved into the 3rd place in the FedEx Cup standings. Maybe he can help expedite some passports for his fellas with some of the extra change in his pocket.

⚽️ We’re a group of people who have no idea what’s going on when it comes to soccer, but here’s what we do know. The English Premier League started its 2024/25 season this weekend. It’s a 33-week season that will be sure to keep many of you occupied on the weekend mornings before the football kicks off. You can check out the BBC’s guide to the EPL right here.

Back To Football

We’re through two weeks of the NFL preseason, and here’s what we have learned so far.

People overreact to the reason.

That’s it. That’s what we’ve learned.

We’re just joking.. at least a little.

People definitely overreact and while it’s warranted maybe 5% of the time, the other 95% is just really just unclear because starters don’t really play.

We’re not going to bog you down with a run-through of each team, but here are a few things that are clear from the weekend.

🏈 Sean Payton might be the perfect fit for Bo Nix. Nix hasn’t been named the starter, but he’s led the Broncos to 6 scoring drives in 7 series. Not bad for a rookie.

🏈 There’s no clear starter in Pittsburgh. Justin Fields can make things happen with his feet, and even though Russell Wilson makes better throwing decisions, Russ took three sacks in 11 plays the other night.

🏈Kyle Shanahan likes to get his guys warmed up in San Francisco and he played Brock Purdy with the backup O-line. Purdy had no offensive weapons, and he didn’t do so hot. He also took a few hits. Don’t overreact, the 49ers will be fine.

🏈 Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey has a boot. He hit a 66-yard field goal, and now you can expect Mike McCarthy to kick anything that’s remotely close to the 55-yard line

🏈Mac Jones got about as far away from New England as he could without leaving the East Coast. While he isn’t the starter in Jacksonville, he surely looks more in love with football than when Bill Belichick was his coach. Coincidence? I think not.

I GUESS THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A DC CALLING YOUR OFFENSE

🏈 Caleb Williams is looking pretty darn good as the No. 1 draft pick. Although I still have no idea what this means for the Bears. The NFC North is actually a tough division now, I think.

That’ll do it for today. Enjoy the week, and we’ll be back with more football later.
