Two GOATs of their eras get the job done

Hey, hey, hey! It’s Thursday, and we’re hanging around with an extra February day. We’ve got to do a rundown of some performances last night, including a nice LeBron performance and Caitlin Clark breaking a record. We’ll cover that and more!

Let’s go.

Caitlin Clark Breaking Another Record

Caitlin Clark had an epic night as the #6 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes dominated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 108-60. Clark finished with 33 points last night, but the most impressive part of the night came in the first 20 minutes of play when she had 21 points by the end of the first half. Well, I guess the really impressive part was the 15 points she had in the first 3:15 of the game. Other than dominating from the get-go, she also grabbed the all-time scoring record. This record is part of a record that isn’t part of the NCAA. (more on that later)

Clark passed Lynette Woodard, who had the all-time scoring record, and Clark also set the NCAA single-season record for 3-pointers.

What other records could Clark break before the season is over? She could break the scoring record that is held by Pete Maravich, who played for LSU from 1967-1970 as she is just 17 points behind him. This will probably happen on Sunday when Iowa faces #2 Ohio State.

*Why did we mention something about the NCAA not recognizing the record? Well, the NCAA wasn’t extremely progressive(they’re still not, TBH), and when Lynette Woodard played for Kansas, the NCAA didn’t recognize women’s basketball as a sanctioned sport, so if you played college basketball before it was sanctioned, your record wouldn’t be an NCAA record.

** To be fair, all these rules around records make it complicated, so in like a week, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s breaking another record we didn’t know existed!

LeBron Can Still Get It Done

If you couldn’t tell by the headline, Caitlin Clark definitely might be one of the GOATs of her college basketball era, and I think that’s the best way to talk about LeBron. He’s the GOAT of this era. I think that’s safe to say.

Anyways, even at 39 years old, he can still turn it on. Last night, LeBron helped the Lakers beat the Clippers in a tight matchup. Okay, LeBron more than helped; he practically led the way.

LeBron finished with 34 points, but he had a massive 4th quarter. He outscored the entire Clippers team in the 4th quarter 19-16 and was 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Just to set the scene, the Lakers were trailing by 19 when they entered the 4th quarter.

Just when I thought the Clippers had this thing figured out and they proved me wrong, they went ahead and proved me right!

Luka Doncic Can Have His Cake And Eat It Too

On his 25th birthday, Luka Doncic got a triple-double that included 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 16 assists. Luka gets to have his cake and eat it, too, as the Dallas Mavericks got the W in Toronto 136-125.

Kind Of A Harsh Punishment, No?

Frenchman Paul Pogba, a midfielder for Juventus, has been banned for four years after testing positive for testosterone. The first and worst part we should mention is that Pogba was tested after a game in August ‘23, and he was riding the bench during the match. It’s gotta suck to get caught being on the T, and you’re not even playing.

He was provisionally suspended in September, but now Italy’s anti-doping tribunal has requested that he face a 4-year ban from the sport. Pogba is 30 years old, so a 4-year ban would effectively end his career.

The punishment doesn’t seem to fit the crime. I have one question…. CAN HE HIT A BASEBALL?

Wouldn’t You Know It

Duke’s Kyle Filipowski suffered a very scary knee injury just 4 days ago after Wake Forest students stormed the court after a big win. Well, Filipowski was back in the lineup when the Blue Devils played the Louisville Cardinals and won 84-59. Filipowski finished with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

We’re not picking on college kids, but we hope they got off the court okay.

NFL Team Report Cards

It’s that beautiful time of the year when the NFLPA publishes a report card of all the NFL teams and how they treat their players. The NFLPA gathers information from current players regarding the quality of many things, including treatment of their families, food, nutrition, locker rooms, training rooms and staff, and other things.

The Miami Dolphins were the top-ranked team, and the Washington Commanders ranked at the bottom again. If you want more information about your team, click here.

Honda Classic On The PGA Tour

The PGA Tour enters a Florida stretch of the tour, and players are teeing it up at the PGA National Members Club in Palm Beach Gardens in an attempt to grab their share of a $9,000,000 purse.

We’re looking at a par 71 course that stretches just over 7,100 yards and a field that includes some big names like Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Tune into ESPN+ as early as you want to catch the action before The Golf Channel does a Thursday and Friday broadcast from 2-6 pm ET.
