Welcome to The Caitlin Clark Show
It’s been a crazy weekend of basketball, including a Monday that had some awesome women’s games.
Let’s look closer at all we missed and what we can look out for today!
Men’s Elite 8
🏀 UConn gave us a little scare on Saturday. They opened up fast against Illinois, taking a 9-0 lead, but then Illinois held their own in the rest of the first half and was only down 28-23. If you watched this game, you know what happened next, but if you didn’t watch, we’ll tell you. UConn went on a 25-0 scoring run to open the 2nd half and knew the game was over. UConn advances after winning by 25 for their 730th double-digit win in the tournament.
🏀 Alabama and Clemson battled it out in the 2nd game on Saturday and this was one helluva game. It was an average scoring first half for both team and Bama had the lead 35-32. The 2nd half was fast paced and high scoring with both teams scoring over 50 points. Bama won 89-82 and had Mark Sears as their high scorer who hit 7 threes. This is Alabama’s first final-four appearance in program history.
🏀 Maybe Purdue and Tennessee should’ve just played a 1 vs 1 game for their Elite 8 matchup. Purdue escaped a close call and is advancing to the final four and to be honest, anything less would be disappointing. 7-footer Zach Edey SCORED 40 FREAKING POINTS and had 16 rebounds. Of course, everyone will complain that he gets so many fouls, but Tennessee was hacking at him for most of the game. Dalton Knecht showed why he is still one of the best players in the country for Tennessee, as he had 37 points in the loss.
🏀 Our final game was NC State vs Duke. Duke struggled in the ACC Tournament and lost to the NC State. Duke has been running through teams in the tournament, and it just so happens that they had to face NC State again. While the 1st half looked promising for Duke as they had a 6-point lead, the 2nd half was anything but. Duke was pummeled by NC State and DJ Burns and was outscored by 18. DJ Burns finished with 29 points for NC State and continues to be everyone’s favorite big man as the Wolfpack stays on this epic win streak.
📺️ We’re looking at some great final four matchups, with 11-seed NC State facing 1-seed Purdue at 6:09 pm ET on TBS and 4-seed Alabama taking on 1-seed UConn directly after.
Women’s Elite 8
We want to cover the two games from last night real quick as there we some great performances.
🏀 Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes had a national championship rematch against LSU. First off, you should definitely watch highlights. Secondly, Caitlin Clark scored 41 points in this game. And while she was dropping buckets, she even had time to get assists as she 12 of those. We’re not go to break this thing down play by play, but I’ll let you know my thoughts. This was a helluva game to watch, and my only complaint is that the refs called too many fouls. Did we forget to mention Iowa won 94-87? Well there you go!
🏀 3 seed UConn is finding their stride as they started off the season in a different fashion than usual, opening their first seven games with three losses. The historically excellent Huskies faced one seed USC with freshman phenom JuJu Watkins. Watkins shined with 29 points and 10 rebounds but USC still came up short. Paige Bueckers scored 28 for UConn, and Aaliyah Edwards dropped 24. I love how this Huskies team plays fast, and I think they can compete with any team in the country.
👀 Out of these two games, we’ve got two great teams that will face each other in the final four, with UConn and Iowa playing the late game on Friday. The early game is between undefeated South Carolina and North Carolina State, which SC is heavily favored.
Imagine Your Throwing Your First No-Hitter This Fast
Houston Astro’s pitcher Ronel Blanco threw his first no-hitter in just his 8th start as a major league pitcher. It’s the earliest a no-hitter has ever been thrown in a season, with it coming on April 1, just a few days after the regular season started. What’s kind of wild is that another Astros pitcher threw a no-no last year, too. That Framber Valdez who did it on Aug 1, 2023.
Blanco’s longest outing at the mound prior to this was just six innings, which he did twice. Pretty damn impressive!
