Welcome to math class
Happy Monday!
We’re doing some Monday math as Scottie Scheffler continues to dominate on the PGA Tour. We’ll stay on golf for another minute, and then we’ll move on to the playoffs.
Let’s go.
Golf Headlines
⛳️ Scottie Scheffler has played 5 golf events in the last 2 months. He has won 4 of them and tied for 2nd in the other one. Scottie Scheffler has won 16.3 million dollars from his finishes. That’s $810k per round and $12,056 per golf shot. that was the math part of our Monday
⛳️ Nelly Korda is dominating on the LPGA circuit as she has grabbed her 5th straight, joining Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only 2 golfers ever to do it on the Ladies circuit. Korda has earned close to $2.4 million for her wins.
⛳️We have a rising star in the golf world, and he’s only 15 years old! Miles Russell, the reigning American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year, became the youngest player to make a Korn Ferry Tour cut on Friday. He then became the youngest player to finish in the top 25 since 1983 after he shot a 66 at the Lecom Suncoast Classic. That was a -5 round, and he finished 6 shots behind the winner. AND HE’S ONLY 15! And get this. That Junior Golf award he won… he did that at a younger age than Tiger Woods did… could he be the next Tiger? or at least the next Scottie?
Time For Playoffs
This is pretty wild. Over the weekend, there were 14 games between the NBA and NHL playoffs. All of the high seeds (home teams for game 1) won their games. There are 2 more game 1s in the NHL tonight. Let’s see if the streak can continue!
NBA
I know you don’t want me to cover every score and every stat line from the weekend. That would be absurd. Check out the scoreboard here. Let’s see what we learned from each game 1.
🏀 Cleveland vs Orlando: Defense was the story here… the Cavaliers held the Magic just 15 points in the 2nd quarter and 17 in the 3rd. The Cavaliers showed some grit and while it might be enough to get by Orlando, can it get them out of the East?
🏀 Minnesota vs Phoenix: I don’t think the Suns will get swept, but I think they’re getting bounced in the first round. The T-Wolves have more depth on their bench and can keep fresh guys on the court to defend Grayson Allen and Devin Booker. The two combined only scored 22 points. And the bench points advantage goes to Minnesota, too. T-Wolves got 41 from their bench and Phoenix only got 18.
🏀 Knicks vs Sixers: The Knicks played unselfishly on Saturday as Jalen Brunson wasn’t on point with his shooting and everyone else picked up the slack. Joel Embiid didn’t look well for the Sixers and he went down in pain after hammering a dunk. He did return, but you can tell his knee isn’t 100%. Pair that with Tyrese Maxey possibly being out tonight, and things don’t look good for Philadelphia.
🏀 Nuggets vs Lakers: 2 vs 2 is pretty even. LeBron and AD vs Jokic and Murray. It’s going to come down to the other 3 on the court, and the Nuggets had the advantage in game 1. This might end in a sweep for Denver.
🏀 Boston vs Miami: The Celtics are really freaking good. And if Jayson Tatum keeps playing like he did yesterday, they should be a finals lock. One thing is for sure, though. The Heat ain’t the same without Jimmy Butler.
🏀 Clippers vs. Mavericks: I honestly don’t know what to say here. The Sixers scored 12 points in the second quarter against the Knicks, and I thought that was bad. Apparently, it can be worse than that. The Mavs only scored 8 points in the second quarter and only lost by 12. Also, James Harden scored 28, which isn’t likely to persist, but at least you know he can do it. I’m not worried about the Mavs yet.
🏀 Milwaukee vs. Indiana: Are the Bucks under .500 since Doc Rivers took over? Yup! Did they look better on defense last night than when Rivers took over? For sure. Butttttt.. The Pacers lost by 15, and if I’m the Bucks, I’m concerned. Here’s why. The Pacers shot 21% from 3 and 39% from the field, and they normally shoot 37% from 3 and 50% from the field. If the Pacers shoot how they normally do, they win game 1. I think this could be a 6 game series easily, but the Pacers need to get their feels back.
🏀 OKC vs New Orleans: Playoff basketball is different than the regular the season and the question is.. are the Thunder ready to play physical basketball, especially seeing as they are very inexperienced with such a young roster. They escaped game 1 with a win even though they had a dry spell towards the end of the game… let’s see how they respond in game 2
NHL
Here are a few things to highlight from our first-round games so far.
🏒Hurricanes vs Islanders: Frederik Andersen played lights out for the Canes as he made 33 saves. Evgeny Kuznetsov shined in his first playoff game with Carolina as he scored in the first 95 seconds and assisted Stefan Noesen for the go-ahead goal.
🏒Bruins vs Maple Leafs: Jake DeBrusk sored two 2nd period goals for the B’s in a 2 minute and 32 second span and the Bruins were in control of this game from the beginning when John Beecher scored less than 3 minutes into the game.
🏒 Panthers vs Lightning: In-state rivalries are dope in the playoffs. The Panthers got their first win against the Lightning in the postseason since game 5 of the 2021 first round. The two teams played each other in 2022 and Tampa swept Florida.
🏒Rangers vs Capitals: The Rangers dominated the 2nd period with 3 goals and Matt Rempe became the first Rangers player to score a goal in his first playoff game since 2011.
🏒 Jets vs Avalanche: You got your money’s worth if you paid for a ticket in Winnipeg. Each team had 3 goals in the first period and this matchup had 13 total goals scored.
🏒 Canucks vs Predators: The Canucks had a great 3rd period last night where they scored two goals just 12 seconds apart from each other and the night off with an empty netter to win 4-2.
Here’s something to think about. Teams that take a 1-0 lead in the playoffs at home win the series 75% of the time. Who will be the 25% to come out on top? Hopefully, the Maple Leafs😉
