What's Going On With The Colts?
Good Morning,
It’s the Wild West out there with Rosters in the NFL and MLB. We’re sprinkling in some tennis, basketball, and golf. Enjoy the read, it should take less than 4 minutes today.
NFL Roster Updates
It’s that time of the year when NFL teams need to trim their rosters and there is just over a week before the regular season starts. We’ve had some puzzling moves so far, to say the least. Let’s go over some of them.
Tough Love In Jacksonville
If you ever watch Hard Knocks, you know the coaches can be tough, they can be loving, but they also provide tough love. Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson had to do just that when he cut his son Josh Pederson from the roster as a tight end.
New England Patriots
The Patriots cut Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham, leaving them with only one QB on the roster. Zappe’s release is a shock to everyone. The Pats will need to sign someone in the next few days or they can pick up the 2 guys they just cut and add them to the practice squad if they clear waivers.
Buffalo Bills
Damar Hamlin has made the team’s 53-man roster and that would have been the wildest cut ever after he basically gave up his life for his team last season.
Von Miller is still on the PUP and he will miss the first four games.
Indianapolis Colts
RB Jonathan Taylor did find a place that wanted to make a trade for him. The Indianapolis Colts put Taylor on the PUP a few weeks ago and he’ll remain there for the first 4 games of the season. There’s a lot of nuance to all of this but basically, Taylor is either still injured from last year or he’s using the PUP to “hold out” and not get fined or lose his weekly salary. He will need to play at least six games this year or he will not be able to be a free agent next year and will owe the Colts another year of play, per the CBA.

US Tennis Open
Venus Williams
Venus Williams, who is 43 years old, went out on Tuesday to compete in the first round of the US Open. She lost in straight sets to Belgian player Greet Minnen.
Williams was 21-0 in the first round of the US Open in her first 21 starts. She’s been 0-3 since. The crowd still goes wild as it’s a great time anytime there’s a Williams sister playing at the US Open.
Team USA Puts It On Jordan
Team USA posted a pretty impressive/expected win against Jordan in the FIBA World Cup group stage. USA defeated Jordan 110-62, almost doubling the opponent’s score.
The US had another game with some balanced output. Anthony Edwards led the way with 22 points, Bobby Portis had 13, Jaren Jackson Jr. had 12, and there were scores from every man on the rosters.
Former NBA player, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who was contracted to play for the Jordan National Team and now is naturalized, had 20 points.
The US will play Montenegro on Friday.
MLB Updates
So, So Close To A No No
San Francisco Giants pitcher Alex Cobb was so close to having a no-hitter yesterday but it was broken up by the Cincinnati Reds with just 1 out left in the 9th inning.
Spencer Steer was the one to spoil the no-hitter with an RBI shot to right-center field.
The Angels Pack It In For The Year
The Los Angeles Angels placed right-hander Lucas Giolito, relievers Matt Moore, Dominic Leone, and Reynaldo López, and outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers. If teams were to pick up all the players with about 30 games left in the season, the Angels could save roughly $7 million in salaries.
It’s not the $7 million that the Angels need to save exactly. If a few players get picked up, it will lower the Angels’ luxury tax tier and if they lose Shohei Ohtani in free agency they will get a draft comp pick in 2024 which would be a 2nd rounder instead of a 4th
Other Roster Updates
In other waiver moves, New York Yankees outfielder Harrison Bader, New York Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco, Chicago White Sox starter Mike Clevinger, and Detroit Tigers reliever José Cisnero have all been made available.
The Yankees have also straight out released struggling infielder Josh Donaldson.
Ryder Cup Roster Selected
American team captain Zach Johnson has finalized the 12-man roster for the Ryder Cup. The automatic entries, based on performance throughout the year were Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, and of course, Scottie Scheffler.
Zach Johnson also gets six wild card picks that he can choose himself. With those, he selected Sam Burns, Rickie Fowlers, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas.
Koepka is the only LIV golfer to make the roster.
That’s all for today. Enjoy your Wednesday.
