Women's World Cup
+ The Open Has Arrived
Good Morning and Happy Tuesday. We were getting a little nervous with NBA Summer League ending Monday night because that usually means it’s only baseball for 2 more months. Baseball isn’t the problem, we just know that the majority of people are itching for that first football weekend.
Lucky for us, we’re doubling up with two awesome events this weekend!
Set your alarm clocks and let’s get this party started.
Women’s World Cup
The 2023 Women’s World Cup(WWC) has traveled to Australia and New Zealand and kicks off early tomorrow morning and there is one big question.
Can the United States 3-peat?!
Okay, let’s be serious for a second. The WWC is starting tomorrow and the timing is very weird. Australia and New Zealand are like 17 hours ahead of the US in time zones (± a few hours).
What does that mean for all of us?
It means very early-morning matches and very late-night matches. Or very late-night matches and very early-morning matches?? We’re not really sure. They’re literally a full day ahead of us and it would make Doc Brown proud (IYKYK).
The first matches kick off tomorrow morning at 3 AM ET and 6 AM ET and include the host countries. New Zealand faces Norway in the 3 AM match up and Australia faces Ireland at 6 AM. Both matches are on FOX.
When does the USWNT play their first match? They play Vietnam on Friday at 9 PM ET on FOX. The fun part is, this is actually a Saturday morning game for the US but you know….. time travel!
Want to preview all the teams? We got you, just check out this guide from ESPN.
Want to make some bets? Sick, the USWNT are +225 to win and Germany, the 2nd ranked team, is +725.
Don’t worry if you miss a game or two, we’ll be covering the WWC which takes place over the course of a month.
The Open
The Open aka the The Open Championship aka The British Open aka the most prestigious golf tournament is ready to tee off at 1 am ET tomorrow morning.
Why is the chase for the Claret Jug such a historic event?
It’s the oldest of the four golf majors as the inaugural tournament was held in 1860.
The Open is hosted on a links-style course, located near coastal areas, and brings undulating fairways, DEEP bunkers, and mother nature does the rest.
We get to see amateurs earn their right to play alongside some of golf’s best players.
Players can define their careers with an Open Championship win.
This year’s championship is being hosted at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake. The last two times it was hosted here we had historic wins from Rory in 2014 and Tiger in 2006.
Where is the course and what’s the weather like? It’s just along the coast of the Irish Sea, only a few minutes west of Manchester, England. The course has been experiencing wind, rain, and some sun over the last few weeks, and you never really know what to expect when you’re in the UK. It could be a beautiful sunny day and that can all change to wind and rain 30 minutes later.
So, we told you to set your alarm clocks earlier, but you could also pull an all-nighter if you wanted.
Players tee off “tomorrow morning” at 1:35 am ET but the tee times you likely don’t want to miss will come later in the morning for day 1. Here are some important pairings you’ll want to catch.
3:47 a.m. — Sam Burns, Sepp Straka, Chris Kirk
4:03 a.m. — Jordan Spieth, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jason Day
4:14 a.m. — Padraig Harrington, Seamus Power, Talor Gooch

10:10 a.m. — Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Tyrrell Hatton
If you’re up early and want to catch the action, tune into the USA channel from 4 am-3 pm ET on both Thursday and Friday.

Does A Salary Cap Even Matter?
Seriously, it’s a good question. You could definitely buy your way to a championship in the NBA, the NFL would be a bit tougher, but doable. When it comes to baseball? Apparently, payroll doesn’t matter at all.
Why doesn’t it matter?
WE’LL TELL YOU WHY!
The New York Yankees have the 2nd highest payroll, coming in at $280 million. Now, they just signed Judge to a huge deal in the offseason and other teams’ payrolls will increase as they resign key players to massive contracts but here’s the crazy thing. The highest payroll team is $70 million ahead of the Yankees. and it’s the New York Mets, with a payroll of $350 million.
and guess what…BOTH TEAMS STINK!
The Yankees are at the bottom of the AL East and the Mets are 4th in the NL East and sitting below .500.
It’s not all bad for the Yankees, they’re 5th in the wild card race and they are playing in a good AL East division. They aren’t terrible but they also are very below expectations. The fans and organization expect top-tier play out of this squad. Sure, they're dealing with a few injuries and now Josh Donaldson might be out for the rest of the season, but something needs to change and the answer isn’t trading for Ohtani so they can spend another $50 million in salary next year.
As for the Mets, this just seems like a terribly failed experiment. They’re 8th in the wild card race but maybe not all is lost. The Mets owner, Steve Cohen, said he’s a patient guy and that he’s not making trades and not firing anyone until after the season. He wants this team to figure it out. The Mets still have a talented roster but they are sitting closer to last place in the NL than first place. If they don’t have anything going by the end of July, they’ll be out of the playoff race.
#RantOver
I rambled a bit today, but that’s what caffeine and excitement for golf will do to you.
Thanks for reading and most importantly, have yourself a great Wednesday… and don’t forget to share with your friends!
