After We Said All Those Nice Things
Apparently, Dan Hurley and the UConn men’s basketball team didn’t read our post yesterday. The #1 Huskies were upset last night by Creighton.... by a lot.
We’ll dig into that upset and talk a little about soccer, hockey, and college football.
Let’s get this ball rolling and get your day started.
#1 UConn 66 | #15 Creighton 85
👀 Dang, dude, the Huskies got whooped by 19 points, and the Creighton student body rushed the court in celebration. It was a pretty calm rush off the court, but hey, it’s the first time Creighton has beaten a #1 team in history, so we’re glad everyone had fun… well, almost everyone!
Here are a few points on the upset.
🪫 You gotta get up for Big East play, but this UConn team knows they’re destined for more than a Tuesday night regular season win. The Huskies have a real shot at repeating for a National Championship, and to be honest, their battery was probably empty. The Huskies had a big weekend hosting #4 Marquette in Hartford. UConn dominated that game and had Marquette packing their bags at halftime. You play a big-time Saturday game like that and will likely come out flat on a Tuesday.
👉️ Here’s another point we need to make. Creighton was 50% from beyond the arc. That’s right, 14 of 28 from three. UConn was a bad 3 for 16, just below 19% from three. It’s tough to win like that. It’s a little combination of one team playing great and the other team playing well below average. You could sum it up like UConn’s head coach Dan Hurley did. “Coaches did a bad job coaching and the players did a bad job playing”.
📈 It’s a great win by Creighton. Let’s see if they can stay hot, as they’ve won 4 in a row in conference and have four games left before the Big East tournament.
Women’s Gold Cup
Concacaf has kicked off the first edition of the Women’s Gold Cup, including teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean. It’s a 3-week tournament that will take place every two years, and this year, it includes four guest teams from South America. It’s almost a primer for the Olympics that is coming up in Paris this summer and will have a similar amount of games over the same period of 3 weeks.
There aren’t many games on the main broadcast, but the USWNT did play against the Dominican Republic last night. The US won 5-0 with a goal from Lynn Williams, Jenna Nighswonger, Alex Morgan, and two from Olivia Moultrie.
The US will face Argentina in their next matchup on Saturday night.
Here’s a look at the bracket setup below.

Snipers Working Overtime In The NHL
🏒 The Florida Panthers had an OT win at home against the Ottawa Senators, and the Panthers have now won 6 straight games. Florida was up 2-0 entering the 3rd, but Ottawa would score two goals within 3 minutes of each other to tie it up. Anton Lundell scored the game-winner in overtime, just 90 seconds into the extra time.

🏒 We had another game go into OT last night in a New York Islanders / Pittsburgh Penguins matchup. The Islanders traveled to Pittsburgh after losing in OT to the Rangers on Sunday at Metlife Stadium. Last night's game was a roller coaster ride for the fans of both teams. The Penguins had a 1 goal lead in the 1st, and the Islanders scored 3 in the 2nd to take it to 3-1. Pittsburgh would close on the lead with one more goal in the 2nd to enter the 3rd period down 3-2. The Islanders would score midway through the 3rd to extend the lead by two, but the Penguins would score two goals over the next three minutes and take this into OT. Adam Pelech would score the OT goal on a dirty wrister, and the Islanders won 5-4.

🏒 The New York Rangers extended their win streak to 8 games after beating a tough Dallas Stars team 3-1 at MSG. Igor Shesterkin was the star of the show yesterday, as he made 41 saves on 42 shots, and a lot of the saves were like the ones below.

College Football Playoff
The College Football Playoff has agreed to a 5+7 format to expand the playoff to 12 teams. It’s a system that automatically gives a playoff spot to the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large bids for the next highest-ranked seven teams.
If you want to learn more about this or see what it would’ve looked like in the last two playoffs, check out this article we wrote last week about it.
